Hot Take: No doubt Randy Rhoads was a fantastic guitarist technically, but his tone…

..was flat as a pancake. Jake E Lee and Zakk sound so much better live on those Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman songs.
Edit: Corrected my misspelling of “Rhoads”

Difficult to take this seriously when you cannot even spell his name correctly.

I prefer Zakk's tone as far as Ozzy's ax men go. It's got serious balls.

I'll take Randy any day over those other two.

A mid-heavy tone is not flat.
You're telling me you listened to songs like Over the Mountain, I Don't Know, and Diary of Madman and came away thinking that sounded flat?

I mean don’t you expect flat tone out of a hi gain/compression genre of music?

I will admit that Randy’s studio tone left a bit to be desired, but the live tone he had on the Tribute album was awesome! That CD was actually what got me into listening to Ozzy back in the day. It was just cranked! Always on the verge of feeding back. It was like he was in a heavyweight bout with his amps. Tommy Aldridge’s drums sounded so much better too. It’s just something about playing in an arena that just makes everything sound huge.

Love Randy's playing, but not a fan of his tones.
I wanted so badly to get one of the polka-dot RR-sig MXR Distortion + pedals that came out earlier this year simply because it looked so damn cool.
I didn't bite because not only was it overpriced thanks to scalping ... I knew it would sound like a cardboard boxcar. That pedal has to be among the worst dirt boxes ever made.
My favorite tone from the Ozzy stable is Brad Gillis, he's one of the main reasons I still today use a 34-year old Boogie Mark III halfstack. Shame we only heard his tone live and never heard it in a more controlled environment via an Ozzy studio album.

That’s what is great about art: no clear better or best, just taste.
