Hot take: By far, Motley Crue’s greatest moment in their recording history was…

…In The Beginning/Shout At The Devil. There is nothing else in their catalogue that comes close to giving me the “feels” like that does.

too fast for love is their best album and it isn’t particularly close, every song shreds
shout at the devil was pretty good but had a fair number of skippable songs
theatre of pain was trash outside of the 2 singles
girls girls girls was also not that great outside the 2 lead singles, except maybe all in the name of rock
dr feelgood obviously has some heavy hitters but still, lots of filler if you go back and look
decade of decadence was cool but only i think 2 new songs, though both were great. if they hadn’t spent so much time on the road they could have squeezed in their best album right here.
Corabi album is pretty good but it’s almost like a different band
i get what they were trying to do with Generation swine but it mostly misses. Afraid is pretty good.
new tattoo is god awful
saints of los angeles is, for this point in their career, solid. but if you go back and listen it’s not really all that great

Drac,
I agree with pretty much everything you said except for your thoughts on Shout at the Devil. I love all the songs with the exception of the cover of Helter Skelter. Totally agree on Feelgood having lots of filler. It just sounded amazing with the Bob Rock production. I hate they got back together & are still playing. They should have stopped after the 2005 Carnival of Sin reunion tour. They have been embarrassing themselves ever since.

for shout at the devil i think:
intro/title track
looks that kill
too young to fall in love
knock em dead kid
ten seconds to love
are all very good songs. the rest aren’t really bad per se, and definitely better than some of the filler on subsequent albums, but i don’t think hold up all that well in comparison to the songs i listed above. they are kind of their time quiet riot inspired “metal” which is fine it’s just nothing special.
unrelated but i also should shout out Bitter Pill and Enslaved from the 98 greatest hits, which i think are both good and for whatever reason aren’t on apple music/spotify.

I thought Girls, Girls, Girls was their best.

This was their second peak, but I generally agree with the OP - never lived up to the promise of the early work.
Of course, they lived the lifestyle and gave us one of the great books of the era - The Dirt (forget the adaptation, which was fun but straight trash).

Most underrated song in their catalogue, for sure.

I disagree a bit. Too Fast For Love has more filler than Shout at the Devil.
Also, the Corabi album deserves more love, even if it does sound like a different band. Hooligans' Holiday, Power To The Music, and Uncle Jack are three of their heavier (and better) songs.

I wasn’t clear in my original post, but I was just talking about a single song, not the album. I remember camping when I was a kid and a buddy played In The Beginning and Shout At The Devil on his boom box. It completely changed my music life. I was a fan of metal from then on.

Too Fast For Love is an amazing record. So is Dr. Feelgood. The rest of their albums are hit and miss, at best.

Merry Go Round is awesome.

Dr Feelgood is awesome beginning to end.

Yeah, those are great songs.

1000%
But it's gotta be the original Leathur a records version. Even though it's still better than any of their other releases by a mile, the Elektra version pales in comparison. They literally took out the heart and soul
TFFL is one is the greatest pop punk albums of all time.
Mick Mar's solo on Merry-go-round is his best imo.
