Hidden Tracks on Albums

Why was it such a prevalent trend for late '90s and early '00s bands to place hidden tracks on their albums? I'm okay with a hidden track that's a few minutes after the final listed song, but some of these damn bands went overboard by placing 10+ minutes of silence before the "music" would resume.
The majority of the time it seems like it's not even worth your time to wait and listen. Is this just a big "frick you" to fans or is it clever and fun?

Probably to get you to listen to the entire album - not just a song here and there.
Digital music/mp3s/itunes pretty much ended it.

Because despite patiently waiting for several minutes to listen to this hidden track, the listener usually winds up disappointed. What is recorded is often nothing more than some ridiculous outtake from the studio or what can be viewed as simply "noise". It seldom ever pays off.

I liked the backwards lyrics of albums in the 70's and 80's.
My favorite 90's hidden tracks
Pearl Jam - "Master/Slave"
NIN - "Suck"
Dre - "Bitches Ain't shite"
Green Day - "All By Myself"
Lauryn Hill – “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”

Trying to remember some but I can't.
Everclear - I will be hating you for Christmas is the only one that came to mind

I honestly enjoyed their cover of Cheech and Chong's "Earache My Eye" on the final track of Follow the Leader. You have to look for the silver lining on that record.

I remember finding the one on the Limp Bizkit album "Significant Other" and thinking it was so cool. God I am disappointed in myself.

BTW, Third Eye might be the best hidden track I can think of.

and if it was worth the wait it was obnoxious having to get to it when you wanted to hear it in the future.... not a fan of the technique at all.

Do you watch the after credits scenes in Marvel movies? Most of them are not really worth the wait, some are pretty stupid. Its still fun for the fans though. Same thing with hidden tracks, its fan service.

They really sucked when I was ripping all my CDs to put on the early MP3 players back in high school. The song with the hidden track would be fricking huge with the 7 minutes of nothing between.
It wasn't really feasible with albums or cassettes, and it doesn't make sense with mp3s, so it just sort of took off on CDs.

To this day, Sponge's "candy Corn" on Rotting Pinata is my absolute favorite of all time.
