Our greatest living songwriter and arguably the greatest songwriter ever.

Now whisper words of wisdom and Let It Be while you hear the blackbird singing in the dead of night while you dream about yesterday and love being such an easy game to play.

Happy birthday to the living king of music.

Can you imagine what real knights would think about McCartney, Elton and Alex Ferguson having knighthood?

Close race between McCartney and Dylan for best living songwriter. Both are behind Townes Van Zandt and probably John Prine for the best, ever.

Eh. Not a Dylan fan and have never understood the fascination.

Also, although Cyhthia Weil died a few weeks ago, a number of major Brill Building figures are still alive:

Mike Stoller
Carole King*
Barry Mann
Jeff Barry
Neil Sedaka

Don't forget the Motown writers like Smokey Robinson ("He's a great poet" - B. Dylan), Holland-Dozier et all

Throw Ray Davies, Brian Wilson, & Elvis Costello into the mix

*When the Beatles came to America L&M said their goal was to write songs "as good as Goffin-King".

Who?

FWIW Bowie was offered one but turned it down (as did John Cleese and actor Paul Scofield -- apparently it's not all that uncommon)

If that was truly taken yesterday, man he looks great. You would think the rock and roll lifestyle would have taken more of a toll on him than that.

If you showed me that picture without me knowing who it was, I'd guess he was 65. You can tell he still has all of his marbles. What a blessed and great life he's had.

Sir Alex. Has twice the manhood of McCartney and Elton but still nothing but a football coach.

To be fair. I’m not sure anyone really knows how old replacement Paul is.

But I thought you might like to know
That the singer's going to sing a song
And he wants you all to sing along
So let me introduce to you
The one and only Billy Shears
And Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, yea
