For the last few weeks my hands have been going numb after playing 3 or so songs at church. By the time the 4th song is over I can't feel the strings as I'm fretting them. I have been playing for 15+ Years and I've never had this problem before. It seems to happen more frequently when I'm playing a song that has one or more bar chords in it. Has anyone had this problem? If so how did you correct it. I'm afraid the answer is to stop playing for a while but I can't really do that. At least I don't want to do that.

Edited spelling error.

I went to the doctor today. It is carpal tunnel, however, they said it be too difficult to treat. I have to limit my playing to Sunday mornings for the next two weeks, take some anti-inflamitory meds, and sleep with a wrist/hand brace.
I also booked a lesson with my old guitar teacher just to see if I was doing something weird while playing, and I was. We got that fixed up so I should be good to go in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for all the advice.

Could be carpal tunnel syndrome.

It's a common problem. Numbness is not good, but there's a good chance it will resolve with rest and anti-inflammatories. You could also try wrist supports; any drug store or Walmart will have simple, cheap elastic bands that fasten with velcro, which I liked better than these:

Those things have a metal loop you can see in the photos, and I didn't find them very comfortable.

May not be chronic. I know some pros that have had similar deals and got some wrist/palm/elbow stretches that look awkward but work for them. I'd do some key word searches & see if you can find them online through a guitar forum or the like.

I appreciate all the advice. I'm going to definitely do some more searching to see what types of stretching I can do. I'll also get one of those wrist supports.

Has the frequency and/or intensity of masturbating increased? Serious question and could have a direct effect on your playing.

Stretching is another good thing to try. There's lots of discussion on numbness/pain on the Internets, so keep searching. Also, check your posture and hand position while playing. If you sling low like Jimmy Page, it can help a lot to hold the guitar higher and tilt the neck up more like classical players do. For seated playing, the NeckUp guitar support is the bomb:

My second favorite would be the Dynarette cushions.

No it hasn't but that is interesting, I didn't realize that could cause problems. And I'm 30 so it shouldn't be age related.

Use thumb alot? A lot of flexing of wrist.

Just in my shitty amount of picking I can tell it can make you prone to any of above mentioned syndromes.

Rest!!! No practice for you.

Tighten up your strap so that the guitar sits higher on your chest. If it's too low, you have to curl your left wrist too much, especially on barre chords. Also helps if you set it at an angle rather than parallel to the ground. Look at the way Sonny Landreth wears his guitar. It looks kind of goofy but that's really the best way, posture-wise.

Don't listen to Heady. He gave up when he couldn't learn Glycerine.

Assuming he plays right-handed, he probably also faps right-handed, so it wouldn't affect his fretting hand.

If you get a prescription and have insurance, the 500 MG stuff is way cheaper than Aleve. I usually get a bottle of 30 for a dollar and change.
