Agree. The weird thing is I really like the self titled debut but they took a step back w/ Killers and then a huge step forward w/ Number of the Beast. Killers album cover is one of the best in rock history though.

Comparing low budget debuts to big budget major label follow ups is probably not a fair illustration.

I don't think Killers was a step back - but NOTB was certainly a galactic leap forward. I would also say Somewhere in Time is a pretty big leap from Powerslave.

The addition of Dave Grohl on drums was a large part of the improvement between the two albums.

Just finished listening to Obscured by Clouds

More of a soundtrack with a lot of instrumentals. I love that album. I dont care what anyone says. OBC is a great album to throw in and just listen to the entire thing. I had probably listened to it for 10 years and never know the name of any of the songs

Just a great listen

Another:

Warren Zevon from Wanted Dead Or Alive which sucked, to Warren Zevon (self titled) which is a borderline masterpiece.

Of course it helps that Jackson Brown mentored Zevon during the making of that second album and he had some incredible backing musicians.

If I still played baseball, “Negative Creep” would be my walk-up song.

Those backing musicians really got around. I learned three of them from Stevie Nicks' 1981 concert film, Bob Glaub (bass), Russ Kunkel (drums), Waddy Watchel (guitar). They played with Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, and on and on. 70's singer/songwriters loved those guys. Bonus musician from the Stevie Nicks film was Roy Bittan, who accompanied her for a sublime piano/vocal opening to "Rhiannon", a song I don't otherwise even like that much. That opening is killer, though.

Obscured by Clouds was not really a true PF album IMO. It was a soundtrack written for a movie.

correct, its a shorter album and they were already working on dsotm when they made this.

Another,

INXS:
INXSIVE to Shabooh Shoobah.

shabooh shoobah was their third album. Underneath the colors was the second, which was better than the first. I feel like it was a perfect transition into the huge hit they would become.

inxsive was a comp album

Thought slippery when wet to New Jersey was also a good jump. But you are correct on your initial response.
