Been playing bass for roughly 10 years and last year decided to get an electric guitar just to noodle around with. Been playing it through my bass combo amp which actually doesn't sound too bad but I'd like to get a practice combo amp specifically for the guitar.

I bought a Zoom multi effects processor last month so something to compliment that would be great. I recently tried out a fender mustang, boss katana and a peavy vypyr and thought they sounded pretty good but I'm not sure that's the best route to go since I already have a multi effects processor. I guess my budget would be around the $300-$400 range.

Anyone have any suggestions? I’m planning on going to Guitar Center soon to try a few but their selection is somewhat limited.

I've been looking for one and picked the Boss Katana Air.

Will check back after Christmas and let you know as haven't tried it yet.

Sorry guys I should've been more specific. I should have said "combo amp". Thanks for the replies so far!

I think they have bundles of the Orange Micro Dark and Micro Terror out there either Sweetwater or Amazon with the 8" speaker.

So it's a tiny head but effectively a combo in that setup.

I would go with something like a used blues Jr. Go on reverb.com.and they should be in your price range, plus it's a tube amp. I always buy used nowadays. Since your using an effects processor, all you need is a good clean amp to run your effects into.

Also check into a Laney Cub. It comes with a 12 inch speaker. Its 15 watts and sounda great clean and with gain. It also has a 1 watt feature, so you can play it quietly and still.sound good. It was my first amp before I switched to something bigger. Can't recommend it enough.

I just bought the Mustang LT25 for hotel rooms when I travel. Does that task beautifully. I don't want anything outboard with a practice amp, everything already inside, pure plug and play. I'm still exploring what all it can do and it's already met if not exceeding my needs and expectations.

I have a Line 6 Spider IV 75 combo in my den that is the same way except more wattage. Its greased Boogie Mark III halfstack sim (akin to Whitesnake S/T, Metallica AJFA, and vintage Steve Lukather) at non-performance volumes sounds better than the actual Mark III halfstack in the shop at similar low volumes. No complaints. And I could gig with it if I had to.

Tech 21 Trademark 60. Look for a used one on Reverb.

I'll second the TM60, I not only practiced around the house but gigged hard with one in my last band and it never once let me down, not even when it got rained on during a set at an outdoor gig in Metairie.

Brownie points for the onboard SansAmp. FOH will ADORE you if you show up with one.

Does your multi effects have amp and cab sims? Effects? If so it shouldn't matter what amp you get because you're just using the speaker

How loud do you want this amp to be? Any size limits? Budget is pretty small (not too small though, you can find something good), so features make a big difference.

You should make the tube vs solid state decision first. Tube is a superior sound, but need to turn it loud to get the full effect. Solid states can be good at low volumes, but some are definitely better than others.

Like others have mentioned, The orange micro terror is cool. I have one (2 piece but is tiny), looks great and actually quite loud. It’s a hybrid (tube/solid state preamp/power section). Hybrids have sort of gone out of favor in recent years which I find surprising, but I think it can be attributed to solid state advancements. Also many (solid states) have modeling capabilities as part of their appeal, so there it’s not like there is separate market with better solid states without the effects in the same price range.

If you just want something to plug your effects pedal into and not think too much about it, get a used fender or Marshall solid state with12 inch speaker. Won’t cost you but $200-300 and they are available.

15watt tube will give you better resale. Probably the biggest combo market in the 15-25 watt range, usually come with a 12” and powerful enough to keep up with a drummer in practice sessions for the most part. Not all are great pedal platforms, but this will be a better route if you just need it for power and a speaker.

Personally I always buy with future (resale) in mind. Or, if you have a very specific need. For instance, I just received a Yamaha THR30II, because I needed something small because I had to move to an apartment after Ida and didn’t want to worry about pedals or even cords for that matter. It’s awesome, but it’s the only product that checked all my boxes. It’s also comparable to the ones you listed, but it’s better sounding and has rechargeable battery.

In summary, think about what your needs are, what do you want to use it for? If it’s just to plug in and use with effects pedal, don’t overthink it, get something used, practice until you know what you really want and then you don’t have the expensive amp you didn’t really want.

Yes it has amp and cab sims although I'm not sure how good they are. Has lots of effects too.

I should have been more specific but this will be strictly a bedroom practice amp. I'm not planning on jamming with anyone as it's just something for me to learn on. As others have stated I basically just need a good speaker to plug my effects into. But I want it to sound good clean as well. As far as my budget goes I'm fairly flexible on that.

Based on the suggestions in the thread I've done a bit of research and am now leaning towards a tube amp. I know they have to be cranked but there are some amps with attenuators (a new word I learned) which make them good for home use.

At one point I had narrowed it down to either a Blues Jr./Pro Jr. or the Laney Cub 12 or 10 (seems most people prefer the 10). Also seems like people either love or hate the Blues Jr. for whatever reason .

I'm not opposed to buying used but I've had mixed results with used stuff. Unfortunately the amps I was leaning towards are a hair more brand new than I'd like to spend. They were around the $400 range not too long ago but now they're hovering around the $600 - $700 range.

I did come across a Monoprice 15 watt tube amp for $250 which I'm considering. The only thing I don't like about it is the color which I guess I could get over lol.

What Zoom pedal do you have, G6? If it has amp and cab sims I'd get a Headrush FRFR-108 or 112. They are full range flat response speakers that are made for using modelers with cab sims. Perfect for your application.

I don’t think it’s a bad choice, but the ones you listed

These are loud. However, I’d either recommend this route (tube)or forgetting about your pedal board and just getting a katana. I personally love the tube feel, but rarely have the circumstance to turn it up. If you do, there are a ton of good tube amps in that class

If you don’t like the hassle of buying and selling used stuff, this isn’t a bad option. Is really cheap. Cheap enough you could paint it if you don’t like the color

They can be, but the Cub has 0.75 watt input that makes it great for home use. I loved my cub 12, but, I gave it to my nephew last Christmas. Honestly, don't think he's even used it. I had the 10 and 12 and definitely like the 12 better, but that's just me.

Yeah there are a good bit of attenuated models. Problem is most of these start right outside his price range
