I don't get it either. I know the Big Lebowski joke, and then the fact that they are overplayed etc etc.
But they wrote and played such good music. And did vocal harmonies as good or better than anyone else. Don Henley is one of the best vocalists of the classic rock era.

I have always liked the Eagles, but they could have done and been so much more if Henley and Frey weren't two of the most egotistical douche bags in the history of rock n roll. Don't get me wrong I love their music and Frey will be missed.

And he really only strummed I believe. Not really known for lead.
20-23 year old me would be absolutely destroyed. I LOVED them. And in college the greatest hits album was always nearby.
The Eagles got lumped in with alot of things people THOUGHT sucked about the 1970's. That Country/Rock scene was maligned, and they got overplayed. But they got overplayed because they were great. A stage full of voices who can harmonize and all play their instruments?

The Eagles wrote the soundtrack to so many of our lives. I will never forget being a kid and watching my Dad cooking in a black pot on the back patio. Music was always on, blasting. Many times classic country (well just country then), many times Wayne Toups or other Cajun, and many other times it was the Eagles. I can remember going on crabbing trips and blaring "Take It Easy" as we cruised down a Hwy 35 south of Kaplan watching the sun come up. I can remember cruising to Grand Isle as an adolescent blasting "Lying Eyes", not fully understanding the meaning of a painful break-up yet. Ive been playing guitar for over 20 years, so the first time hearing "Hotel California" sparked alot in my creative soul. Losing legends like this is indeed like watching your childhood erode away. I'll always be thankful for what Frey, Henley, Walsh, Schmit, Felder, Meisner and Leadon have contributed to music.

It's not a competition. Though, it does speak to the tastes of the board that Glen Frey gets a sticky and Bowie doesn't. To be honest, the Eagles mean next to nothing to me, while Bowie's death hit me particularly hard for a celebrity death.
But that's just a personal thing. Again, it's not a competition of who gets the most post-mortem tributes. There's nothing wrong with it, but this board's tastes skew much closer to the Eagles than to Bowie.
