New Zealand drummer and educator Stan Bicknell, who was loosely tipped by fans as a possible contender for the role, posted a cryptic message to his Instagram Stories: ‘I’ve just been informed they are going with Shane, but you didn’t hear it from here.’ The Shane in question is Shane Hawkins, the 17-year-old son of the late Taylor Hawkins.

Josh is just about universally loved and respected by other musicians and fans alike. He is a world class pro and has a large fanbase due to APC, Devo, GnR, and other ventures. He's not some no-name session guy who just filled in for a minute.
With all the personal drama a few months back and now this, Dave isn't endearing himself to their fans or anybody else right now.

Yep. Freese is a top drummer in the rock world. One of my favorites and one of the most fun to watch. I saw him with APC in 2004 in Dallas, and he had broken his leg before the tour started, but decided to stay on and just use his left leg for the bass drum. I wouldn't have even noticed that there was anything wrong with him based on the performance.

I remember in the Some Kind of Monster documentary, there was a bit where Metallica told Robert Trujillo he was in the band and that he was getting a salary and like a $5 million signing bonus.
A lot of bands are set up with key members, so you don't have situations like some of the old Motown groups where you would get one guy who joined in 1968 and four ringers touring as the Temptations. Think that happened with Guns N' Roses - Axl Rose demanded that he have the rights to the name, that's how you ended up with Chinese Democracy being released under the GNR name with no Slash or Duff.

This board always loses their minds when a band replaces a singer or dares to tour with anything other than the original lineup, with AIC and Lynyrd Skynyd being the prime examples. The fact is every major band is set up like a business with one or two owners that can continue the band with whatever lineup they want as long as the main person is involved. I'm not sure how Skynyrd is set up since they currently have no original members but I would guess Johnny owns the band. With Pantera for example, Dime and Vinnie's girlfriends now own it so they can put out whatever lineup they want.

I’m sure Freese turned down some opportunities thinking he’d be committed to FF. So I can understand why he’s pissed

$1M.
I do also wonder if it truly was a signing bonus or an advance. It was Lars that told him after all.

Even if he didn't have other things he turned down, that's a shite way to do business with one of the most respected musicians on the planet.
Monetarily it was good for Josh, I'm sure but musically it was a step down IMO. Foo will never do anything nearly as good as "Judith", "Orestes", "The Noose" or "3 Libras" to name a few.
Sting wants you in his band and Stewart Copeland and Mike Portnoy are two of your biggest fans...but you're no longer good enough for Foo Fighters, that's just absurd.

I was under the impression that they hired him mostly for touring? Maybe it means they’re recording in the near future. Dave was the drummer on But Here We Are.

I hope they aren't bringing in Taylor's son.
Not sure he’s ready for the big seat and play huge shows just yet

What are you talking about? Show me the thread where people are so upset that D'Arcy wasn't included in the Smashing Pumpkins reunion and tours that they've been doing. Comparing something like Foo Fighters replacing their dead drummer to replacing Layne Staley, the voice of AIC, or literally the whole band of Lynard Skynard does not make sense.
It's not like people being upset that a band wants to continue with a new lead singer is something that only this board does. That's kind of universal. Why? Obviously because lead singers', and sometimes other musicians' contributions are so important to the sound of the band, that replacing them isn't really possible.
Dave Grohl IS the Foo Fighters, and perhaps their guitarists too.
Billy Corgan IS The Smashing Pumpkins.
Trent Reznor IS NIN
Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell ARE AIC
Shannon Hoon IS Blind Melon
IMO you can't replace the unreplaceable. Hawkins was a great drummer, but let's be honest. Grohl could do the drumming on their next album and it will still sound like a Foo Fighters record. He already did it with their latest album.

very common for a “band” to be an incorporated entity with either board members or LLC partners (ie owners) that may or may not include everyone.
This
I learned all about that when Slipknot randomly fired Jay Weinberg as their drummer last year
He did an interview and said he found out over email. He said the original five members have an LLC and the rest of the band are just hired guns.

I don’t see them just throwing little Hawkins in the band. That’s a huge step up
How good is he?

What would be cool is if the Foo Fighters just went away.

Not sure of his talent, but his age shouldn’t matter. Some of the best bands in the history of music had teenage members.
