Opiate is an EP, not a full album.
Its an album... The whole EP vs FL is argument is fricking stupid.
So just discredit anything a band did prior to going longer than 6 songs or 30 min?
What if a band does an EP in middle of their careers, do you just forget about that as it didn't exist and it gets a pass?

Pixies Come on Pilgrim (technically an EP, but it's 8 songs) Surfer Rosa Doolittle
Almost posted this, but wasn’t sure if Come On Pilgram counted and kind of feel that both Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are the third level of the meme.
Almost posted Modest Mouse too but felt Lonesome Crowded West was too good to fit.

I didn't make the rules and I'm not going to argue with you about it. EPs have never been considered albums.

Also add to that, Opiate and Undertow songs were all written at the same time. Kind of goes against the progression question of the OP.

Minutemen:
The Punchline (1981)
What Makes a Man Start Fires (1983)
Double Nickels on the Dime (1984)--brilliance achieved.
Husker Du
Everything Falls Apart (1983)
Zen Arcade (1984)--you can argue this was their best but IMO:
New Day Rising (1985)
I almost did Talking Heads (Fear of Music ruined it) and The Clash (Give 'Em Enough Rope ruined it).
