Bill Lee, yes the spaceman from the wacky 70's Red Sox baseball team, is so good it's scary. Listen to the strings....
How anyone doesn't appreciate his impressive body of work is beyond my comprehension.
WZ was a fan & friend of Beth Verret, former director of Festival Internationale du Lafayette.
When he heard of a heart felt, yet modest concert, to defray expenses for Beth when she was battling cancer, he showed up in the Park at Catahoula and the played 12 string guitar and backed up every local performer at the benefit.
He never needed to come forward to play one of his songs. It seems he simply wanted to be there, at the public park in Catahoula to support Beth in any way that he could.
Surreal.

Zevon played a couple of concerts at the Varsity in the early 90's and mentioned the festival which was ongoing for at least one of the shows anyway. It was a very small crowd, nobody on the floor when he opened with "Splendid Isolation". There was no problem standing 10-15 feet from Zevon who did the show solo/acoustic. It was just outstanding. At the end when he asked for encore ideas he looked at me and arched his eyebrow since I'd been on the floor in front of him all night. I yelled "Bill Lee" which wasn't the greatest idea without strings to back him up. He just shook his head and said "can't do that one". About a year later he showed up again, word was out and it was a lot more crowded. Another very good show.

I heard a few years ago that Jimmy Buffett bought his catalogue or the the rights to his song from the Estate, but I can't confirm.

And she sings on several songs on Zevon albums (Excitable Boy, Empty Handed Heart, Bed of Coals).
The list of musicians that appear on the first few and last Zevon album(s) is absurd.
It's a colossal waste that he pretty much threw away a decade+ of his career/life with his addiction to vodka.

Her "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" is so bad I actually hated that song for years, until I heard WZ's original. (But if you really want to hear awful, listen to Linda's covers of Elvis Costello. She's great with standards, but as far as rock & roll is concerned, the less said the better).

Many of Zevon's albums have that same sluggish, midtempo-thud feel so common to this El Lay sound, masterminded by manager/moguls like David Geffen and Irving Azoff.

I was watching a documentary about his last album, a few weeks ago. There was a clip, right before he was going to Letterman I think. Billy Bob Thornton says they should record a song "before you go.". Then Billy Bob gets this look and he's like "shite. That's not what I mean. I mean before you leave. Like in a little while.". Warren shook his head, laughed, and then it cuts to them doing Knockin, and after they're all just kind of looking at each other. It was sweet and sad.
