It does require skill. Yea you're using samples, but you have to compose all of this. I don't like EDM or the EDM crowd, but that's them. They probably think what I listen to sucks, but frick them if they think that.

If a random person were given the physical tools to make any kind of music you listed, which do you think he would be more successful at? You're horribly dishonest if you say "orchestra".

EDM is great at nightclubs but I could never listen to it while driving, unless I was racing maybe, or while working around the house.

I always laugh when people with no musical background say things like "they're just pushing buttons and playing with a laptop! Back in my day musicians played real instruments"
How about I set you up a MIDI keyboard and a computer with protools and see how long it takes you to make a song. You wouldn't even know where to start

While I don't necessarily like all of it, the producers who can blend a lot of genres into EDM music I consider to be talented. The pop EDM music is annoying but EDM in this decade is essentially what new wave was to the 80s or what eurodance was to the 90s.

Ecstasy doesn't require anything more than a steady beat to dance to so it works out.

Although it's definitely not my thing, I'll acknowledge that it takes talent to create a good EDM track in the studio.

However, when I see the "live" events, I laugh my fricking arse off. Geek jumping around sporting phony dreads or shave head, whatever, with headphones. At that point, it's pretty close to "pushing buttons".

Nobody is denying that you would be able to get by without literally knowing how to operate the relevant equipment. The point is that if you do know how to work the equipment, then creating a "song" is radically easier than, say, writing an orchestral piece. That doesn't mean it doesn't have any artistic value.

I don't know a soul who actually thinks it's good. EDM serves its purpose of letting you get skulled on molly and partying with other fricked up people while some music plays in the back. I dont' know anyone who enjoys that type of music who listens to it sober while in the car.

When these EDM threads come up, I'm always confused.

There are 2 sides to Electronic Dance Music. There is the crowd who considers most EDM to be commercialized garbage (I fall into that category), and there are those who are just getting into Dance Music who think it is the greatest thing ever. Those people are usually very ignorant of Dance Music history etc.

I never know what people are really intending with the term EDM.

Not all dance music is the same. Just know that.

There is intelligence in every genre of music.
