I play the acoustic guitar. It seems to be very similar to the guitar. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

The only thing I know about them is that mandolin players spend half their time tuning their instruments and the other half complaining that they're out of tune.

I don't think they're that similar to a guitar to be honest. They're tuned like a violin for one thing. And the way they are played is very different.

Has strings and makes sound is about all they have in common.

I have messed with a Mandy. Tighten up your fingers because you gotta play smaller frets. G C D songs will be your bread and butter at first, find some Dead tunes to practice with.

I used to play a mandolin more often. I rarely pick it up these days. It is tuned "upside down" from a guitar.....from the top its G D A E rather than E A D G....obviously no B or high E. But if you can play guitar you can become passable on a mandolin pretty quick. Getting really good at it takes time though.....which is probably why I dont play it much anymore.

I have a solid-body electric that I frick around on a slide with. TBH, the frets are just too damn small for me to ever feel comfortable with it.

like he said

Without the pesky B/E half-step tuning it makes the theory part easier to see, as all the fingerings will have similar intervals (look). My old guitar teacher (from years ago) said, since owning both guitar & mandolin he'd be comfortable teaching the two at same time...however just went with the big boy for most part. Never got good but found lead/solo pretty easy to sound acceptable. .... On plus side they're real easy to take places.

Get a nice Mandolin, try to play it,then make a nice lamp out of it.

I tried, but that neck is just too damn little. The wife loves her lamp though.

Thinking about trying the fiddle, those would make a great lamp.

I made a purchase...

I like it! I quickly learned the g, c, and d chords and began jamming...now, I am not ready to start picking up the tiny neck just yet, but this is fun, nonetheless!

I have a couple of them that don't get played much because I'm more worried about being mediocre on the guitar.

My hippy black sheep brother plays it as his instrument of choice. They are pretty damn fun to mess around on. I learned some chords on it and just started adding fills. It's a great subtle instrument and I've actually been thinking about getting on for my recordings.

A mandolin is simply a poor man's dobro. The mandolin technique is similar to guitar but the sound is completely different.

For a superb mandolin experience listen to Raffaele Calace: Mandolin Concertos (Naxos label, # 8.570434)

Radim Zenkl a short 1st lesson he's no David Grisman ( 73 ) but solid fast or slow ...

for ideas:
quote:

"He plucks, strums, uses a bottleneck slide and even taps the strings with a pencil to elicit sounds previously unheard and perhaps unimagined on the mandolin."

... or if you want to try and fly (Sam -covering Sailin' Shoes) he wears this out live.
