But as you got older, you began to understand it gained an appreciation for it?
A couple examples that come to mind for me are Paul Simon(w/ or w/out Garfunkel) and Neil Diamond.
Makes me also picture them sneaking a few bong hits while listening to it.

Not at all.
My parents were in their 20s when I was a kid in the late 70s/early 80s and listened to "current" pop/rock. Must have heard Steely Dan's Aja 1,000 times back then and still listen to it pretty often.
My mom was watching Mtv(Jack and Diane video) the first time I ever found out about it(81 or 82).
If my parents had been into folk music and groups like Peter, Paul, and Marie, it'd probably be another story.

My mom had great taste in music. Marvin Gaye, Aretha, Otis Redding, Ray Charles. Great stuff and I always knew it.

Of course I did. But my dad had opera voice training so sang arias around the house which really made me cringe but now I like listening to opera. He also played guitar and sang old country stuff some of which I liked at the time. He lead singing down at the church of christ too and they paid him a little bit for doing that and I liked a lot of those old church songs.

Nah. I always kinda dug the doo-wop stuff.

Grew up with Big Band swing. I still love it to this day. And my teen years were dominated by the British Invasion , Surf music, and the rest of the Classic Rock genre. Those horns still hold a special place in my heart though.

My earliest memories are my parents playing jazz and big band records on a huge vacuum tube console stereo. It sounded magnificent. I ended up with their record collection. I love hearing that stuff as much as rock music to this day.
I'm about to pull the trigger on some used McIntosh tube components to rediscover my vinyl collection with.

Nope. My mom always had the 45s playing. I heard a lot of Simon & Garfunkel, Dobie Gray, Otis Redding, Bee Gees, Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell, Marvin Gaye, Joe Barry, Tom Jones, Elvis, and a bunch of others. I have all of those 45s myself

My dad is the reason I appreciate great music. Sounds like you were a tad bratty

I used to roll my eyes at swamp pop but I grew into it when I was in my late teens and had my first real love.

my parents listened to Hank Sr. Never really liked country. But so many people list him as a musical influence.

I was a teen in the mid to late sixties, my parents rolled their eyes at mine.

Not at all. My dad was in a band back in the 70's. He would only let me borrow 1 album at a time. While my taste in music has more genres than his, we still bond today over musicians we both like.

No. Not really.
We used to listen to their records before we were old enough to start buying our own and I still enjoy their taste in music. It never went the other way, but that's ok. It doesn't for me either with my kids.

Nawh, they were into singers like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, and Louie Prima and it turns out crooning along proved beneficial in the long run. Now if you were to ask about the Grands and Lawrence Welk that's a completely different take.

I grew up on Alabama and Hank Jr. and still listen to it.

Grew up listening to oldies stations getting dropped off at school by my dad. Not sure how much it influenced me but I listen to a little bit of everything now.

My parents were musicians--a singer and an pianist. As a kid they played classical, standards, and show tunes. I learned to appreciate Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, etc. But they also are the reason I first listened to "Sergeant Pepper", "Eat a Peach", and other classic rock albums. I still love Carole King because it was my Mom's favorite.
I was lucky to grow up with their music.
