He's the devil, and he's the judge of the contest...so how did he lose? I mean...isn't dishonesty an inherent trait in the devil?

On purpose. Giving Johnny a fiddle made of gold has as predictable a result as letting him win the lottery. Within 2 years Johnny was addicted, divorced, bankrupt, and had lost all his friends. It was purely an evil thing to do.
