Actually , deftones are a much more sought after band for talent buyers.

They are no bigger than Shinedown playing

Shinedown - 10m Records Sold
Deftones - 8m Records Sold

Musically, Deftones are prob better, but popularity wise, this is no bigger than the Varsity landing Shinedown.

I'm not a huge Deftones fan, and like I said on here earlier, I saw them live before and I thought they were pretty bad.... With that said, it's a good booking for the Varsity.

I agree, if its going to sell out at $46, then its good business for the varsity...

Who the hell is Shinedown?

I'm pumped for this. I've never seen them live so it should be awesome.

And the reaction by the majority of this board is why I rarely click it. Indie rock can't be too indie when 95% of this board apparently thinks it's the only rock that's relevant.

you don't read this board very often then. this board is extremely opened to all tastes. but this is not as big as the OP was making it out to be. i'm sorry, but he makes these acts out as though the who are coming to the varsity.

it's a good get for the varsity. but just not as good as portrayed

I'll give doc some credit on this one, it was actually worthy of a hype thread. Big score for the varsity.

Of course it is. It'll sell out and they'll make a lot of money. It's great for the Varsity. But I view it like the Criterion Collection. The way they can put out a four disc set of the 39 Steps is that they also occasionally put out a special edition of a Michael Bay film. The profits from The Rock pay for them to put out other stuff.

The Varsity has Willie Nelson and Deftones. They can then use this to get middle tier acts instead of putting out another show for some cover band.

Baton Rouge is a college town. You're telling me they can't get a college audience to see acts on the college charts? It doesn't matter much to me, I live in Dallas, but I looked up what similar venues have coming in here. Trees holds 600 and the Granada holds 1400. So, pretty similar to the Varsity. They have coming:

The Octopus Project
Josh Ritter
Heartless Bastards
Of Mice and Men (thought they were bigger)
John Spencer Blues Explosion
Toro Y Moi
Mushroomhead
Sum 41
KMFDM
Frightened Rabbit
This Will Destroy You
James McMurtry
Calexico
Purity Ring
Punch Brothers
G. Love and Special Sauce
Old 97s
Tame Impala
Eels

And I doubt they are running a charity. But that's a pretty good spread of acts for similar sized venues. Sure, they also have their cover bands, tribute acts, and dance parties to keep the lights on. But none of these acts wanted to come to BR? Why isn't the Varsity trying to bring in acts like this IN ADDITION to Willie Nelson and the Deftones?

This thread really got my hopes up. I hope the varsity continues to try and bring in bigger bands but I could care less about Deftones. I think Shinedown, who I unfortunately have seen, is a pretty good comparison.

Whoever mentioned Deer Tick, Trampled by Turtles, Old 97s these are the kind of bands the Varsity should be going after. Not washed up post-grunge bands from the 90s.

This is a good get for the varsity, although they arent my cup of tea. And it wouldve went over a whole hell of a lot better if you didnt start this thread. Your hurting the varsity by starting these threads, if i was the talent buyer, i would tell you to stop posting. Just my 2 cents.

Im excited for north mississippi allstars and would love to see a jeff tweedy solo show there.
