Nirvana Nevermind was definitely over pearl jam ten. Both were important records but Nevermind took on a life of its own. It was the defining sound of the early to mid 90's, I don't really think it was the"best nirvana album" either.
A lot of more talented bands were around that grungy scene too, Alice in chains and soundgarden were musically and lyrically great.
Persoanlly,..the list I'd make and I can't say 1 album for ten years of music.
1970s:
Black Sabbath -Black Sabbath
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Judas Priest - Hellbent for leather
1980s
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Oz
Bathory - Under the sign of the black mark
1990s
Nirvana - Nevermind
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar
Nine Inch Nails - The downward Spiral
2000s
Gorgoroth - Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam
Burzum - Bellus
Cannibal Corpse - Kill

Add a Zeppelin album and I agree. Maybe even throw in Aerosmith's Rocks.

Rock, sure. Defining? Appetite for Destruction.

Good rock list.
For the 90's I go
Nevermind
Dookie (paved the way for the punk/pop of the late 90s/2000s)
Sixteen Stone (tons of influence for many bands of the time)

lol it's a personal list, I didn't really get into much of the 2000's rock and metal. I know system of a down, slipknot and etcwere big to some people, I couldn't get into them though.

a decent argument could probably be made that the chronic is the defining album from the 90s.

Definitely a defining rap album, that along with "All Eyez on Me".
I'd have to put "Mellon collie and the infinite sadness" by the smashing pumpkins along with those.

90s was a shite era for music. All the rock stars and metal heads music careers began declining and genres began to intermingle with eachother for a disgusting marriage of sound.
I really couldn't pick an album from the 90s. Or 2000s (at least on here).

No way man. I lived it. The 90s was great and still is. At least until 98-99. Except those last couple of years, it was legit.

Hard to not have a beatles album from the 60's IMO.
Some other great choices for the 70's have been made.

Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper, Revolver, The White Album, just off the top of my head - although Hendrix was pretty badass.
Also, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys deserves a mention for the 60s.

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Boston - Boston
