Deeply personal songs by tragic artists

While the music industry will never be starved of musicians battling their inner demons, there are a few who lay it all bare in their lyrics and songs. These songs are heartbreaking, because we know their battles and recognize their pleas for help.
3 songs that are always in my heavy rotation are what sparked me to start this thread. I'm sure you already know one of them just from the subject matter.
Alice In Chains - Nutshell
The music is perfectly haunting. The lyrics are as raw as you can find, and Layne's singing sells the pain. We all know what he went through, and it hurts my heart every time I hear this son. This is an alltime favorite song of mine. I can never truly pick one song I love best overall, but this is one of the contentders.
Beautifully sad stuff here
Mad Season - River of Deceit
Staley yet again with McCready and some other Seattle musicians. As above, he is laying it all out. This song is more of a cry for help and him seeking hope as opposed to Nutshell. He's admitting he is the only one to blame for his troubles, and he speaks of transcending it to become a better man. Sadly that never happened.
I remember after he died where Al Jourgenson of Ministry, one of the biggest heroin users in the music industry, said that he went to visit Staley not long before his death, and he was floored at how much heroin he was doing. That's like Jordan calling someone else a better basketball player.
Blind Melon - Change
Hoon always stated this was his favorite of all their songs. It's a very upbeat song, and the lyrics are so full of hope while telling the world just how damaged his is. Throughout the song he keeps balancing his depression and drug addiction with his determination to be better. As happy sounding as this song is, it's message is truly sad. He's desperate, and he ultimately lost.

Assemblage 23 - Disappoint (Funker Vogt RMX)
About the musician's father's suicide. This remix improves on the original, in my opinion.

New Life
quote:
Suddenly everything is fainting
Falling from a broken ladder's rung
There's a jolt exhilarating from the phone I'm holding
I hear the words of what I'll become
How eager the hands that reach for love
'Cause now there's a new life to behold
And its the biggest part of my life to unfold
'Cause now she's telling me she'll have my baby
And a faithful father I am to be
When I'm looking into the eyes of our own baby
Will it bring new life into me?
Deep inside must defy arrangement
I've been a stumblin' from the startin' blocks 'til now
And I'll always try to justify the way I've been behaving
Should I teach one not to know how?
How to live in a world we live in now
'Cause there's a beautiful life to behold
And its the biggest part of my life to unfold
'Cause now she's telling me she'll have my baby
And a father figure I am to be
When I'm looking into the eyes of our own baby
Will it bring new life into me?
Oh please
Oh please
Oh please
Bring new life
Bring new life
Bring new life into me
Unfortunately, he fell back into his old habits and died when Nico was like 4 months old.

It wasn't his own song, but when Kurt Cobain belts-out the final lines of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" to close Nirvana's "Unplugged in New York" record, it sounds as though he's letting every last bit of air out of his body and saying goodbye to the listener. It was a hell of a note to go out on.

The whole “Dirt” album.

Dirt always struck a nerve...
I want to taste dirty
A stinging pistol
In my mouth
On my tounge
I want you to scrape me
From the walls
And go crazy
Like you made me
I want to taste dirty
A stinging pistol
In my mouth
On my tounge
I want you to scrape me
From the walls
And go crazy
Like you made me

I’ve been spinning Sun Kil Moon’s Benji a ton lately. I feel like it fits this thread well. Such a raw, fantastic album. Unfortunately it seems like one of those situations where you may have to separate the art from the artist though, since more and more evidence is mounting that Mark Kozelek might be a bit of an a-hole.

Oh, and the best album from last year (in my opinion) fits perfectly here. A little too perfectly since David Berman killed himself not long after releasing it.
Purple Mountains- All My Happiness is Gone
Purple Mountains- That’s Just the Way I Feel
Purple Mountains- Storyline Fever
The interesting juxtaposition is that despite the bleak (and brilliant) lyrics the music is often jaunty, catchy alt-country
Purple Mountains- All My Happiness is Gone
quote:
Mounting mileage on the dash Double darkness falling fast I keep stressing, pressing on Way deep down at some substratum Feels like something really wrong has happened And I confess I'm barely hanging on
Purple Mountains- That’s Just the Way I Feel
quote:
Well, I don't like talkin' to myself But someone's gotta say it, hell I mean, things have not been going well This time I think I finally fricked myself You see, the life I live is sickening I spent a decade playing chicken with oblivion Day to day, I'm neck and neck with giving in I'm the same old wreck I've always been
Purple Mountains- Storyline Fever
quote:
On occasion, we all do battle with motivational paralysis Unable to perform some simple task Trapped at the stage of analysis Thoughts of the shortness of life may beget Bouts of shortness of breath in your chest Doubts about the worth of the nights you got left Crowding out all the fear and regret
