Joe Cocker - Little Help from my friends is better imo.

CCR's cover of Suzie Q (along with most versions) are way better than the original by Dale Hawkins.

I'd add "Heard It Through The Grapevine" to that. There's just something about Fogerty's tone and expressiveness that's always gotten me, not to mention he's an outstanding, tasteful guitarist. Likewise, people who cover his songs make me want to kill myself. Tina Turner, I'm talking specifically about you. I can't stand her in general, but what Ike and Tina did to "Proud Mary", overplayed as it is, ripped all the charm right out of that song and turned it into some kind of gay caricature.

IMHO Dale Hawkins's Suzy >>> CCR. Besides James Burton's guitar on the original, Fogerty sometimes has an unfortunate tendency to go overboard on the Howlin' Wolf vocal mannerisms. And don't even get me started on the psychedelic bits in the extended version.

The Coal Porters (an alt.country/Americana band led by Sid Griffin, formerly of the great '80s cowpunk band The Long Ryders) do a superb remake of "Who'll Stop The Rain".

Not on YouTube, unfortunately.

Johnny Cash retroactively gave a cliched whine designed for teenage poseurs actual meaning and heft. In Cash's hands, the song is about a lifetime of regret and the crushing weight of those mistakes he can't undo. "I will make you hurt" becomes a warning, not a pose.

This is just silly.

The two versions are very similar, and you're basically saying that Cash's version is good, and NIN's is bad, because Cash was old, and had been through more.

BTW, I prefer Cash's as well, but to praise his, and bash Trent's is silly.

Came here looking for this and there it is.

I'm not the only one who recognizes this oft-ridiculed band for improving on the original.

eta: Also props to Frente - Bizarre Love Triangle
I forgot about that. Love that little bitch's voice.

Sure, but nearly every cover of TVZ sounds better than the original.

I wont necessarily say its better but the timeliness of the cover made the song that much better. The lyrics fit Cash's life perfectly after June died and resonated even more after his death.

It's not just Cash is old and Reznor is young, it's that Cash uses his voice as an instrument to convey that regret. He had a wonderful, weary voice at the end of his life. The lyrics of Hurt are pretty silly and they are whiny as hell. Cash is able to recontextualize them because, well, he's a far more gifted singer.

I'm saying Reznor is a poseur.

Any cover of NIN will be better than the original. Even if it's Tiny Tim.
