I'm sure some people will doubt this, but Anthrax does some of the best covers. They just released a EP of all covers called Anthems, and it's out of sight. They do Boston, Cheap Trick, Journey, Rush, AC/DC, and Thin Lizzy.

[link=(www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HT433Tu_iU?)]Boston - Smokin'[/link]

[link=(www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq-OPoNXf-Y?)]Rush - Anthem[/link]

[link=(www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbpkOJD3dwE?)]Cheap Trick - Big Eyes[/link] This one stays stuck in my head
Also, back in 2003 they released a double disk set called Bacillus Anthracis Coveris and Besidecus. It's got some remixes but is mostly covers. Kiss, The Police, more Thin Lizzy, The Temptations. Truly amazing songs, and they do 'em justice.

[link=(www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1rmJS5iDTQ?)]The Temptations - Ball Of Confusion[/link]

[link=(www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUIlBjiz-ME?)]Thin Lizzy - Cowboy Song[/link] If you don't like this, you don't like rock 'n roll

Then there's Metallica. They may not have made a good album of original material since the 80s, but they are one of the best cover bands ever. Check out Garage Days. They do Diamond Head, Mercyful Fate, Budgie, Motorhead, Blue Oyster Cult, and a host of other great covers.

Probably the greatest cover of all time. Thank you NIN for writing such a great song for Johnny Cash to knock out of the park.

Sneaking Sally Through The Alley - Phish

No way. The Robert Palmer original with The Meters as the backing band is legendary funk. If you don't have the album of the same name get it. The opening suite of Sailin' Shoes->Hey Julia->Sneakin' Sally Thru the Alley is outstanding.

-That spanish cover of "Hotel California" from the Big Lebowski (also I know a lot of people are a fan of the TVZ cover of "Dead Flowers" but I much prefer the Stones original)

-The White Stripes - "I Just Don't Know What to do With Myself"

One that's at least AS good for a fantastic song is:

Enjoy the Silence - Failure

Just a great cover of a song that must have been hard to take out of its time as post-80s rock.

I'd also say I Will Survive - Cake and Hurt by Cash.

Foo Fighters - "Baker Street"

Bad Livers - "Lust For Life"

Also Tedeschi/Trucks do "Hercules" better than Aaron Neville ever did.

hank you NIN for writing such a great song for Johnny Cash to knock out of the park.

I actually don't think the original is all that good. It suffers from the problems of most of early NIN, that's it's just warmed over Ministry made more palatable. Instead of aggressive, it appeals to the whiny which let's face it, most teenagers are. So well done. But the purification through pain metaphor was already a cliche when the song was written and its eye rolling inducement from its posturing is one of the mnay reasons I don't much like NIN.

Johnny Cash retroactively gave a cliched whine designed for teenage poseurs actual meaning and heft. In Cash's hands, the song is about a lifetime of regret and the crushing weight of those mistakes he can't undo. "I will make you hurt" becomes a warning, not a pose.

He turned a negative copy of a Duran Duran song into an outlaw country ballad. And that's why he's the Man in Black.
