Think you are fairly music savvy but hear an original on the radio and think WTF?

Happened to me today. David Bowie "Heroes". I had no idea and am man enough hear to admit it. Thought it was a Wallflowers song only.

Confess here. You are among friends.

Sturgill Simpson - Medicine Springs

Cover from Stanley Brothers

Awesome song and Sturgill kills it in the Pickathon video. Always wondered why it wasnt on an album

I didn't know I Love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett was a cover until years later, if that counts.

The Arrows original version from 1975

Meh. JJ's was better.

The Bowie song is a classic. Didn't know The Wallflowers covered it but I bet it sucks.

"The Man Who Sold The World" I didn't realize it wasn't a Nirvana original.

I always thought Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends" was an original.

I never knew the Rolling Stones's "Honkey Tonk Blues", "Satisfaction", and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" were covers.

"When the Levee Breaks", "Who Do You Love", even "Twist and Shout" were all covers.

Land of Confusion - Disturbed/Phil Collins.

It's funny cause the cover sounds so much better than the original, even though the band itself is much worse.

I found out Saturday on wwoz that Black Magic Woman wasn't a Santana original, but rather Peter Green wrote the song.

Time Is On My Side by the Stones, they covered Irma Thomas' version. But she covered Kai Winding's recording of it. Lyrics were added for Irma's version

Didn't hear it on the radio, but a friend played me the original version of "Respect" by Otis Redding. I always thought it was an Aretha Franklin song.

My apologies. I thought the Otis Redding one was the original. It's not fair when the cover and the original come out in the same year! They were literally recorded days apart for goodness sake!

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails was made in 1994.

I had never heard it until I heard Cash's version before he died.

Yes and no.

When Trent heard the cover of Hurt he told Johnny Cash he was 'giving' him the song because he made the song so much more.

Class act.

A few days ago I heard the original version of Bobby McGee by Loretta Lynn. Threw me for a loop.
