Is it a cover when the song's writer is actually second to release her version?

I learned a couple years ago that Dolly Parton wrote and sang "I Will Always Love You."

Her version is better IMO

Sturgill Simpson - Medicine Springs

Cover from Stanley Brothers

Great song, didn't know this either.

Amarillo By Morning wasn't first sang by George Strait. Chris LeDoux and possibly others recorded it first.

Absolutely (and Whitney's was great, no doubt.)

I always knew it was a cover, though.

Willie wrote it, but had he recorded it (more than a demo) before Patsy did? I thought at that time Willie was doing more songwriting than recording.

Willie was almost exclusively a songwriter at that point. He tells the story about when they brought them together for him to present her the song.

Patsy's is the original and the songwriter's version (in this case, Willie Nelson) is rightly considered a cover.

George was actually the third? person to record it.

First recording was by the song's co-writer, Terry Stafford, on his 1973 Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose album. Ledoux recorded it in 1975 for his album Life as a Rodeo Man. Strait's version, easily the best known and IMO the best version, comes from his 1982 Strait From the Heart album.

I didn't know I Love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett was a cover until years later, if that counts.

I did not know that until you posted it.

A few days ago I heard the original version of Bobby McGee by Loretta Lynn. Threw me for a loop.

It was written by Kris Kristofferson but was first recorded by Roger Miller (1969).

"Always Something There To Remind Me" by Naked Eyes.

Originally done in the 60s, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, recorded by several people, most successful being the hit version by Sandie Shaw.

Just Don't Know What to do with Myself

Thought Jack White pulled this from some Bacharach refuse pile.

Never was a Dusty Springfield fan, knew this was penned by Bacharach and David, but couldn't place from whence it came.

Anyone remember Mama's Boys doing Mama Weer all Crazee Now?

I thought it was theirs. Then I heard Quiet Riot. I was confused. Didn't even know Slade existed at that point. Oh, and this is so much better than Quiet Riot.
