The video was incredible with lots of powerful imagery. I guess he's embracing the trap trend in hip hop right now for this song, and there's lots of ad-libs from mainstream trap rappers, which made the rap part funny, at least for me. Overall, the music was rather simplistic, but I liked this video a lot because the amount of detail put into it.

Disagree. It was basically like a spoken word slam poem mixed with friendos packaged as some bold political statement. To me, it just wasn’t an entertaining song. I liked Redbone because I like Bootsie Collins, which is what it was.

He began his career as a rapper.

I think a lot of people heard Redbone and think that's his sound. The spoken word slam poetry is pretty close to a description of a rapper, and that's the majority of his work.

This strikes me as him moving forward by trying to integrate both rap and soul. Both elements are there in This is America.

after watching the video and the actual song the way it was produced, i will take back a little bit of my comments and say it was ok.

The SNL performance, however, was garbage. At least him singing that song

Well, I don’t really care much for rap, especially trap, so I definitely don’t care for this either.

That's sort of what I meant when I said people got tricked by Redbone. It makes you think he's soul based when he's been closer to rap for most of his career.

FWIW, it seems like he's using the triplet style to push the message of the aggressive America focused on guns, violence and drugs. That style gets associated with trap and it seems very intentional for him to adopt it, given the overall message of the song.

Thats one of the points to the song. He incorporates many different popular styles of rap over the past couple of years, just like he incorporates the many different popular styles of dance in the video. It serves a purpose to show how america hops from one thing to another, being distracted from actual issues in our nation.

Listen to how Childish raps in all of his previous music. Thats his true style.

Bonfire, Freaks and Geeks, The Worst Guys, and Heartbeat are my favorites.

The song was meant to go with that video. I don’t find it as entertaining on its own propped up purely on lyricism.

I love Gambino and I understand what message he was trying to send with this video.

Is it just okay to say that Gambino has some damn catchy songs, but this song sucks?

Donald Glover is a corporate commercial studio wet dream. He's a sham. A painted facade. A living charade.

And his fans that pave the way for his bland pop vanilla nonsense and declare his almost non-existent music and acting career as the pinnacle of both industries are responsible for the death of creative and innovative music as well as the erosion of the meaning of generational talent.

That is one giant bowl of pretentiousness and non-sense. Nobody is forcing you to like his music or acting. But to say those careers are “almost non-existent” is far from the truth.

That opened the door to big opportunities, but he began with a group called Derrick Comedy.

What?

I can understand criticism of the song, but calling it bland pop vanilla is ridiculous. If anything, it strains too hard to not be vanilla pop and pushes too hard to be edgy.
