They were a talented band, but the individual players weren't particularly great musicians. I'm not saying they couldn't play, but the arrangements were pretty "pop" and didn't require extraordinary chops (I'm thinking primarily about the horn section).

Havin seen Chicago live I have to disagree about the chops of the horn section. I was particularly impressed witg Lee Loughnane(trumpet) I think Chicago is the best of the three, particularly before they lost Terry Kath. They also put out one of the best christmas albums ever.
EWF is the funkiest and most soulful of the three, they have great song after great song.
BST I can listen to for hours. David Clayton Thomas is an all time great voice and their.music could really hook you. They werent afraid to mix high gain guitar and every brass instrument available.
That being said Tower of Power might be better than all of the above, particularly the Lenny Williams days.

Dude, I saw them back when James Pankow was wearing a wife beater and thought he was a rock god.
At the time I was playing trombone in a soul band at the time and I actually began to think it might get me laid. Again, I don't think the guys were bad musicians, but they weren't exactly prodigies.

I didnt say they were prodigies, but I think they had just as good of chops as a lot of the better horn bands.

the early Chicago was special, they evolved into softer popness I couldn't take later tho

But honestly I really like early Chicago, though I probably listen to more EW&F just because of their fun factor.
