I'm leaning in this direction right now, after being on a little BB kick over the last few days.
Anyone else agree? I'd love to hear analysis on this one.

No, Paul's Boutique is a masterpiece. Check Your Head is the Beasties second best album.

This. Both are great though.

I go back and forth between these two, but always come back to Paul's Boutique. The lyrics are just too good.

Check Your Head played a role in some of my "trippier" evenings back in the day, and I definitely was in the right place at the right time when it got released ...but I'd have to say Paul's Boutique still gets the nod as the better album.

Paul's Boutqiue is not just a masterpiece, it is (along with 3 Feet High and Rising) a masterpiece that can never be duplicated. Literally. The sheer number of samples on that record would be prohibitive these days now that we have codified the laws regarding sampling (a system which has generally kept De la Soul's back catalog in the vault due to the inability to clear all of the samples).
I mean, listen to the layering on Eggman. They spliced the violins from Jaws and Psycho, put them at the same speed, and rhen looped them over a beat from Kool and the Gang. That is just an insane level of depth to their sound.
Not to mention just how great the flow and interplay is between the Beasties. This was each MC at their cocky height. They were so gifted with rhymes, MCA ended the Sound of Science on the word "orange" just to bring your attention to it. Orange has no rhyme in the English language, and they not only ended a lyric with it, they ended the song with it with all music dropped out behind it. It is a total mic drop of a band at its cocksure best.
Paul's Boutique isn't just the greatest hip hop album, it is arguably the greatest album in pop music. And it was so far ahead of its time (to a time that would never come, so really out of time), that fans didn't get it at the time of release. They made the audience catch up to them, not vice versa.

Wow...one of the best posts I've ever read on this site! I agree with it all.

So that's the beauty of orange rhyming dictionary? Never thought about it

Put me in that camp. I was like 11 and was let down..it took a few years until i realized how great it was.
Both are awesome though

Oh, me too. When this came out, it was light years ahead of where I was. I was pissed there wasn't another Fight For Your Right. Took me a few years to get it.
And, yes, I've unintentionally crossed us over to a Jets to Brazil conversation! Another great album.

Not arguing, but I think an equal part of the accolades goes to the Dust Brothers... that sampling was all them...
CYH was back to their punk roots...

When you say they, you mean the Dust Brothers. Even the Beastie Boys will tell you the genius of that albums was them, they just sometimes don't get the recognition they deserve. This isn't to poo poo on the Beasties but it was a collaboration of all involved. And your statement about the audience had to catch up to them couldn't be truer.
Me and my posse were one of the few it seemed that got it back then. I wore that cassette out but I was doing more burning to it while many wanted another beer slamming party playing soundtrack. The sonic depth of that album was mesmerizing at the time.
I go between the two though depending on the mood. Check your Head was truly them in their artform though and another departure from the previous album and in a new direction. It hits everything from punk, rap, hip-hop, funk, alternative, it's got it all.

I don't remember the backlash at the time either...
but the summer of '89 was a different time... right out of HS, getting ready for college..
dropping e to the other masterpiece from that summer.. Stone Roses S/T and smoking copious amounts of dope while listen to Paul's Boutique.. PE's Fight The Power was blasting... no cares in the world..
went to college and became very cynical and angry
