Can someone explain the BR music scene to me?

heard about the band neutral snap who played at Freds. Wondering why alot of the talented bands who play at Mid city ballroom or Spanish moon wont ever perform there.
How would someone go about joining a band and playing at one of these venues? its a dream of mine.

Fred's is a frat bar. They're not gonna have hipster rock bands play there.

original bands have to play at hipster dives or all ages venues that don't pay jack because, well, the only people willing to pay to go see live music in this town want to pay to see a cover band. The cover bands are thus able to book the large bars and get paid damn well to do so because that's what the people paying a cover charge want to see. It's not some conspiracy by big bar owners like Fred's. The customer is always right, and Fred's customers want cover bands and b-list rappers, not hipster local indie bands. If people were lining up to pay $10 to see them, I guarantee Fred's, Uncle Earl's, Superior Grill, and the Texas Club would be beating down their door to book them.
However, I did go to Fred's the one time Loudness War played there.
This is why I have to tip my cap to bands like Burnhouse who built their fan bases based off of being a cover band and slowly sprinkled in their originals until they had the fanbase large enough to play both cover band type gigs and original type gigs.
The reality is that the under 40 crowd just wants to hear something familiar or shake their arse to a DJ, and will pay the big bucks and drive to NOLA to see a national act. The over 40 crowd just wants singer songwriters at the Red Dragon, Manship, or Dyson House. Rock n roll that isn't played on FM radio straight up isn't very popular, and since the under 30 single women don't like it, the dudes trying to have sex with those women go where the women are (i.e., not to rock shows). If you want to see more rock bands booking bigger venues, buy tickets, show up, and bring plenty of attractive women with attractive friends (hence the success of Parish County Line). The rule with bars is to attract the women and the dudes with money will follow. If women wanted rock, there'd be rock n roll everywhere.
If you book it, they will come. No, if people come, they will book you.

There's a BR music scene?

BR has four scenes:
1. cover band scene (this is stronger and more profitable than ever)
2. rap and hip/hop scene (down from the glory days of the 90's and Boosie with it's latest star NBA Youngblood going to prison for a long time)
3. singer/songwriter folk: easily the strongest original scene in town. They bring in top big name acts and export a fair number of songwriters to Nashville who have some serious credits to their name. Those retirement-age ex-hippies fill their small, intimate venues and pay full price.
4. original rock scene: it's small, weird, and completely underground, but there's definitely some talent in there.
My band will be headlining the Varsity on December 13th with two other local bands. We'll also be at Park Place in Gonzales this saturday and outside at Barcadia on December 1st.

Drivin N Cryin's "Straight to Hell" hasn't closed out a night at 2AM at Fred's/SI(Reggie's) since the early 1990s..but it will next week at Mid City Ballroom.
Pat Quigley even had Mystery Road disc in Ivar's jukebox back in the day..I'd usually choose 'Malfunction Junction'..and maybe some Social D, early REM, Replacements, etc..

Baton Rouge’s local music scene is a joke IMO. Nobody wants to hear original music they want cover bands. The cover bands play other people’s music good and it’s enjoyable to have a beer and listen to stuff you know. But at the same time, original music is way better and is unique.
The Texas music scene blows La’s out the water if you ask me.

3 good local rock bands that no one knows about because there ain't a scene.
Butchers Dozen, Hydraplane, Booze, Loozy, Baby in the 90s are some other good local bands.
As far as playing at those venues it is pretty cut and dry, they are always looking for new bands to fill up slots. Start jamming with a friend or 2 and you might surprise yourself how fast you can become stage ready

Austin is obviously great, but so is New Orleans. Those two are a wash.
Houston is infinitely better than BR. Most bands will do Hou and ATX. Dallas is meh at best.

Depends what you’re into I guess. I’m into Americana type music. Texas is big on that. I don’t find the Nola scene to be all that. It’s better than br for sure though.

Spanish Moon is still not open yet. No idea when they're coming back.

The rock scene is a little lacking, but the jazz and funk scene could hardly be better.
There's some good bands down there, though. I really like Terra Terra, Tomb of Nick Cage, Paris Avenue, and The Breton Sound

Still sticking to this dumbass theory.
Serious question- have you been to any shows outside of Louisiana?
