Bob Weir... greatest rhythm guitar player ever? I’m starting to think so.

Bob Weir’s set up of Jerry Garcia to do what he do over a vast amount of time and space puts him in GOAT rhythm guitar territory? Put in your headphones and listen to this seldom heard doozy from Dicks Picks. Vol 1. As a new Deadhead I continue to be amazed at what this band did for so long under so many variants on a theme. Happy they make you!

He is great. If you're pretty new as a deadhead, check out the other one documentary on netflix. It's about Bob. There's a quote in there from Sammy Hagar that pretty much says the same thing about his rhythm guitar playing and how he played so many versions of chords.

quote:Part of my opinion on this is because, as a intermediate guitar player myself, the chord progressions and use of multiple chords for the same note, the occasional "rhythm/lead" style and singing while doing all this is just not easy to do. Further, like in the song I linked, you can get so caught up in Jerry's lead that the sound behind his awesomeness often gets over looked.

What they do collectively is amazingly beautiful.

Not much of a guitarist myself but always like the power and feel of Malcolm Young
Edit: “best” or “greatest “ is certainly open to interpretation but as other has said, unique absolutely applies to Bob

He is certainly the most unique rhythm guitarist.

quote:Definitely and probably as important is how he was the perfect compliment to Garcia in so many ways beyond just the "strumming"*. The sum is greater than the parts theory.
He is certainly the most unique rhythm guitarist
*Note - Not many people could take that much acid and function much less create and play on stage so often for so long.

It helped that bobby was like 16 when the warlocks formed and jerry was his guitar teacher. So his whole musical upbringing was playing next to jerry and complimenting what he was doing.

I'm gonna say it's James Hetfield.

Malcom Young would definitely be my pick for best rhythm guitarist. He came up with some of the best riffs in rock, and was happy to let his brother Angus become a guitar God, while he was more or less behind the scenes. As great as Angus is, I think it's the rhythm guitar, bass and drums that make me like AC/DC so much...that and Bon Scott.

I agree that Bobby is the GOAT
here’s a couple more examples:
the outro jam in he’s gone from 72-74
the middle jam in both China>rider and GSET same era
the counter melody in going down the road, same era
go and see Bobby live (when it returns) with his wolf bros trio. You will be astounded at what he can play and how he can play it

In no particular order,
John Lennon
Pete Townsend
Malcom Young
Keef
Not sure you could call Kenny Vaughn a rhythm guitarist but he's my sleeper pick.
