I’ve seen the name mentioned many times on this board, so I finally checked out a couple of live performance videos. I don’t get it. Seemed like Americana/bluegrass/roots music without percussion. What’s the appeal to so many people? (No troll intended.)

Pick up and play a guitar, then you will understand.

It's a weird white people thing. Like the Grateful Dead and On jogging shoes. I don't care how good a guitarist he is if he only plays bluegrass.

I have several guitars, a bass, and a keyboard. And I still don’t understand.

I mean, he seems like a great musician. But so is Yngwie Malmsteen, and I’m not listening to that either.

I've been trying to be a guitar player for almost 50 years, and I think I might be finally getting there.
IMHO, Billy Strings is an awesome player and I would love to have his ability, but sometimes he plays things too fast and certain traditional licks and runs lose their context at that speed.
I wish he would slow some things down a little bit.

I’ve seen him a few times. He’s tapping into that Americana bluegrass vibe mixed with space jazz and improvisation that the Grateful Dead were famous for. He’s not the first to do it but he’s currently the hot artist in those circles.
If you aren’t a fan of bluegrass then it’s obviously not going to be your thing

A lot of his hype was built when vids of him playing house parties and other small gatherings before he was known became popular....that's how I found him. He was able to parlay that youtube fame into playing huge venues so good for him.

This is one with his Dad who is a badass player too.

It’s hardly bluegrass. A lot of songs you’d never know he was playing an acoustic guitar. I don’t really listen to him much but I’ve been to two shows. The live experience is much better than Spotifying his top “hits”.

If you don't like bluegrass, you probably won't dig him. Its pretty simple really.

You like what you like but.. When I first heard about BS, I casually started listening to him. Once I dug deeper, I became obsessed. I can't explain it. His playing is magical to me.

I find it hard to get into new/different music, He was a breath of fresh air to me. Been obsessed for 2 years now. I mostly only listen to his live stuff.

What's a string band for $200.

It's what lots of people clued into when hair bands became a thing.

IE: If they hadn't already had the pleasure of being brought up with good music or been exposed to jams the whole family can appreciate. Grands, parents, and kids.

No doubt he's talented.. but I'm with you.. After about a minute of it, that's all I need to move on.. Good for him though.. glad he's doing well and has an audience that loves it!

This is where I am. The songs are just never going to be there. It's an atmosphere and a style more than actual structured music, IMO.

He also sat in with a hardcore screamo band.

And jams out to Cryptopsy.

And posted an IG story of himself playing the melody to Anat Cohen’s Baião Da Esperança.

It’s not just bluegrass you got to watch a full show. He goes full electric also and the jams are great.
The words are even better. You can really feel his music it’s very introspective hen you feel his music and words together.
He also has a great stage demeanor and is just a cool dude.

Not really disagreeing with any of that. Just not much melody ot hook onto.

Fair enough. I can grasp not liking a whole style.

To me he's a performer. Said it before. Not the-best at any one thing, but he sells it well, and seems to me he's not trying to be everything for everybody. Personally, I'd rather see him than Jagger or Plant.

Plus it's acoustic music; which is not a full nights listening for some.
