After two days I count 7 prefer Waylon and 6 for Merle, essentially a tie.

None for Johnny Cash surprises me a little. None for Willie doesn't. Not that they aren't legends, but their voices aren't in the same league as Waylon and Merle, who I have 1-2.

Thanks for participating.

Im giving it to Merle if he counts. Waylon quintessential outlaw, but man Merle was good.

I always liked this video. Merle Haggard could do everybody else except George Jones

The Gentle Giant, while having an amazing voice, was not an Outlaw or an outlaw.

Merle wasn’t an Outlaw but was an outlaw. Bocephus was an outlaw since Mrs. Audrey asked Waylon to look after him, and Hank, Jr.’s 1970's albums after the fall (and even one before the fall) were certainly "outlaw."

I think original Outlaws would be confined to Waylon, Willie, Jessi, Tompall, and Billy Joe Shaver.

You can add in other outlaws such as Kris, Johnny, David Allen Coe, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, and Jerry Jeff Walker ("gonzo").

Speaking of David Alan Coe. I saw him at the Exhibition Hall in Alexandria, LA somewhere around 1978. It was a beer bash with beer iced down in big plastic garbage cans. He got pissed off about something and jumped off the stage mid song. Broke his arm.

Let's be honest. The whole " outlaw" thing was a silly gimmick and " who was one and who wasn't", is about just as silly.
You have certain people/acts out there right now trying to recreate it, having feuds with each other over stupid stuff.
Everybody should just make the best music they know how and forget about all that crap.

Longtime DAC fan here. But I don’t think he was that good when he was very young. Ever listened to the Penitentiary Blues album? I like middle-aged and older Coe myself.
