One of the first things I learned from some heavy weight professional players years ago....... When you start looking at and comparing players, always remember this. Guys that play/record the material they write are proficient at playing that style in those keys. The truly impressive players are the studio guys who have to be able to play every style in several keys and do it correctly and quickly.

^^^^^ This.
Google Steve Lukather's album credits over the last 30+ years.
Edited to add a direct link to Luke's discography

I believe Eric Clapton was used in the studio for the recording as well - though he was never publicly credited.
I think the better term is "formally" credited. There is zero question that is Clapton's lead part on the studio track. No one denies the contribution, and George, as the peacemaker, was always bringing around guests during the waning days of The Beatles to keep the boys on their best behavior.

Lots of candidates; however best is probably more relative to who's on that day AND perhaps who's not.
This guy Guthrie Govan may have one of those days every now and then. If your into youtube guitar instruction he does some great talks, not just try this, that I've found very helpful.

For me personally it might be Buckethead. He can shred but can also play slower paced melodic material.

Brent Mason and several of the other studio guys doing the work in Nashville are probably among the best players on earth in any genre.

A guy who is pretty darn good is Keith Urban.
His songs are not edgy/angry/complex so he doesn’t get much mention.

So, Glenn Campbell, then?

Imo, I'll tell ya'll who's an underrated and absolutely beautiful player and that's Laurence Juber from Wings.
I've seen him play acoustically 3 times and he's the best acoustic pop/rock player I've ever heard.
If you ever have a chance, check him out.

Any of you guys ever heard of a virtuoso who passed away long before he should have by the name of RANDY RHOADS?

Mark Knopfler and Jimmy Page are my favorites. I saw Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, and Jimmy Vaughn last night all jamming blues together and was blown away. I think of Jimmy Vaughn as a blues guy but didn't realize how amazing Miller and Frampton were playing blues songs.

There are hundreds if not thousands of videos on YouTube of guitarist that no one has ever heard of that are better than anyone that has been listed in this thread, most will remain unknown other than whatever Youtube following they have, that is the reality of the music business.

Lots of Chads and Jodys in here downvoting the Trey mentions
Clearly never listened to any of his playing in Dec 95
