How can anyone David Gilmour as at least top 5. There are many virtuosos but his melodic sensitivity is unrivalled

Love the description.

His restraint is wonderful as well. He doesn’t fill every beat to show off how fast he can play. Sometimes you are just anticipating the next note.

Gilmour has the best tone of all time

Hard to say best EVER, but my favorite stretch of guitar playing is Trey Anastasio from 1992-2000.

He is my favorite. I think the biggest reason is the melody he plays and that he does not overplay the music.

For more hard core stuff, Joe Bonamassa is in that discussion right now.

DG has the best tone of any guitarist hands down.

There is also space in his solos. He gives the music the time to breathe.

Gilmour is my favorite guitar player of all time, but I find myself listening to Gary Moore a lot now.

I like Gilmour a lot but the best tone, and everything else goes to Jeff Beck.

Mark Knopfler is my all time favorite guitar player. Brian May would be up there as well.

While technically an excellent lead player, the music never called for him to play very fast. I do agree he is one of the very best (maybe the best) at expressing the musical content via the electric guitar.

Lots of solid mentions, David G, Joe B, Beck. Gotta give Duane Allman a honorable mention...

Gilmour is the most tasteful. Every note he plays fits. Never over does it, and it’s all feel

Bolded part I definitely agree with you on. No one can play Beck's music but Beck and sound like Beck.

Just caught that Jeff Beck/Paul Rogers show in Houston last Tuesday...

That 74y/o still has it....

Funniest part of that show, me and my buddies who went are all 54, and we were some of the youngest people there...

I went to a Buddy Guy show a few years ago. I think everyone there was at least 55+. I am in my 20s. But the crowd was great, no one was frickin with their phone the whole time.

Gilmour for sure. Eric Clapton is also an amazing guitar player. Him and George Harrison playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps in Japan is one of favorites. I believe Eric Clapton was used in the studio for the recording as well - though he was never publicly credited. So the story goes anyway.
