Right on cue. How's your favorite jam band's latest live album? I heard they start out with a funky groove one of them lifted from an old James Brown track then they noodle on it for the next 15 minutes before they switch to emulating a riff from Chicago so they could noodle on that for the next hour and a half. So epic

Has anyone mentioned The Offspring yet?
no, and for good reason.

Offspring has made some fantastic music, but unfortunately their worst music got most popular after Smash.

How about Green Day? They have consistently produced hits over the last 25 years.
1992 Welcome to Paradise
1994 Basket Case
1994 Long View
1994 When I Come Around
1995 Brain Stew
1997 Good Riddance
2004 American Idiot
2004 Boulevard of Broken Dreams
2004 Holiday
2004 Wake Me Up When September Ends
2009 Know Your Enemy
This month they are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Foo Fighters has been the most consistently good throughout that time period.
Have to agree.
I'm with these guys

They went political with American Idiot, which turned off a lot of old fans. They failed to maintain their new fans as "Know Your Enemy" sucked like most of their stuff after American Idiot. I really liked that album with tracks like "St. Jimmy", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", "Jesus of Suburbia", and "Homecoming". Older tracks by them are still fun like "Warning", "Minority", and "Burnout". They kinda fell by the wayside with most of their pop/punk brethren. They had a great run, but I've been less than impressed with most of their music since their last "big" album. 21 Guns and Oh, Love are ok, but they just aren't that great of a band anymore.

Green Day was part of a communist/anarchist collective when they formed. They've always been political. Maybe not as overtly, but it's always been a part of their identity. If it turned off their old fans, they just weren't paying attention. 90s DIY punk is one of the most political subgenres of pop music ever conceived.
Now, their politics weren't as overt as Pansy Division or Op Ivy, but they were a part of the same scene.

I'm going to make a really bold claim and say that "Weird Al Yankovic" should win the title of best artist of the last quarter century. What a voluminous, varied, and complete catelog topped off with a number one album last year, and that may not have even been his best album. 1999's Running with Scissors is a satirical story-telling genius.

Sure, but the difference is degrees. There are subtle political and societal messages in hits like "Warning", and "Welcome to Paradise". American Idiot was so salaciously unsubtle that it was like being hit over the head with a copy of Mein Kampf. It bordered on anti-Bush propaganda. Rise Against is pretty political, but they play it a little closer to the vest (outside "September's Children", of course). It was just too obvious, too targeted, too blatant.

Why'd RHCP get dismissed so quickly? Because it's not cool to like any of their music past 1990?
In a 20 year span:
Blood Sugar Sex Magik '91
Californication
By The Way
Stadium Arcadium
I'm With You '11

If you can't find a Porcupine Tree song that you enjoy, you either aren't familiar with their catalog or just have downright shitty taste in music.

For me it's because Anthony Kiedis is a poor singer with a highly inflated self-importance. They would be an all-time great with a solid singer with a modicum of versatility.

For me it's my own personal tastes. Their library is impressive and stacks up very well compared to their competition. They are certainly a finalist alongside Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters.

Foo Fighters.
I just don't think they are versatile and creative enough to warrant this kind of recognition. Pearl Jam, while not one of my favorite bands, deserves it, as they've had a pretty versatile and expansive catalog to go along with sustained mainstream success.

This. Their entire catalog of music is virtually identical. It's straight forward rock music. Pretty standard (and shallow) song writing. Their new album which supposedly echoes the cities in which they recorded or whatever sounds like any other album they ever made. They aren't nearly as creative musically or skilled song writers as other nominees here.

Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Blind Melon
Tool
NIN
Rage Against The Machine
Nirvana made the two most important albums of the last 25 years in Nevermind and In Utero. No one has made anything as brilliant, edgy, and important since.
Pearl Jam are a monster. No one important died, and they have been steadily trucking a long, still make new music, and still pack out the biggest venues.
Blind Melon with Shannon Hoon may not have lasted very long, but I'm not sure they made a bad song. Those few albums were great top to bottom.
I'm not sure Tool they have the mainstream appeal of the above but an important and huge band none the less.
NIN aren't my favorite on my list but I respect the shite out of that band.
RATM somehow were a good enough band that they could get away with being militant pinkos and still be one of the biggest bands on the planet.
