So glad I don’t associate with assholes like this on a daily basis.

I made the mistake of watching the full NYT podcast of this, I couldn't make it through. Just the way those people talk in their own language of nonsense, just making up words and concepts as if they are saying something, but nothing is actually coming out of their mouths.

I can get 4 buddy’s in a room with some beer and whiskey and come up with a better list and tell you why faster than these loons.

Those douchebags are exactly what is wrong with the education system these days... If you wanted a real world representation of the south park episode where everyone sniffs their own farts, that is it.

Two of those guys need to be slapped.

Beato’s channel is fantastic, he does some great deep dive interviews with musicians.
Those NYT douches were intolerable, I couldn’t imagine sitting through that whole roundtable. There are few combinations worse than being incredibly smug while being incredibly wrong.

Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, Missy Elliot, Jay Z, Outkast, Romeo Santos, Mariah Carey and Young Thug>Billy Joel, Jimmy Webb, John Hiatt and James Taylor
Btw, I believe Bad Bunny is actually Rican.

The effeminate way these guys speak and gesticulate... are they all gay? Or is this an Ivy League cultural thing? A NYT thing? Or am I just in a bubble where I'm not around people like this?

the way that douche so casually dismisses Billy Joel was amazing
Posted on 5/12/26 at 8:30 pm to deeprig9
Bob Seger should have at least been mentioned.

John Fogerty's absence is glaring.
I watched Beato video the other night. He didn't have to say anything; just let those goofs talk and show their own ridiculousness.
I was going to post a comment on YouTube that it was like an SNL skit about how the NYT came up with the list, but several others had already said the same.

He is and Puerto Rican's are American by birth since its a US territory.
Still doesn't mean he belongs on a list of the 30 greatest American songwriters

quote:Wesley Morris is…he’s actually a very well respected movie critic with a Pulitzer Prize. He used to write for grantland back in the day, and he’s very very smart. I wasn’t aware he’s doing music criticism now but this is extremely disappointing to me as someone who has enjoyed his work in the past
are they all gay?
nobody thinks this is a good list except the people who wrote it

The #Woke is just too strong in them.
I mean, obviously, if there is any sort of objectivity to it, if you are limiting to living American songwriters and the focus is on popular genres of music (i.e. pop, rock, country, soul, R&B, funk, hip-hop, rap, disco), then almost certainly Bob Dylan is #1.
People like Bad Bunny, Young Thug, etc., do NOT belong anywhere near this list. Once you put them on a list like this, you negate it.
Stevie Wonder? Absolutely.
Niles Rogers? Deserves consideration, of course. In the multi-category of being known more for production, but has also performed (Chic, anyone?, as well as for legends like Diana Ross), produced, etc. And his composition skills (particularly their influence on subsequent genres - most hip-hop artists will cite him as an fluence, for example).
Lucinda Williams? I guess so.
Jay-Z? No.
Paul Simon? Yes.
Taylor Swift? No (but I'm probably biased, here.)
Holland-Dozier-Holland? Yes.
Missy Elliot? No.
Lionel Richie? Yes.
Dolly Parton? Yes.
Young Thug?
Diane Warren? Yes.
Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne? Bubble.
Fiona Apple? No.
Babyface? Yes
Stephen Merritt? No.
Romeo Santos? No.
Carole King? Yes
Outkast? No.
Mariah Carey? (As a songwriter, No)
Willie Nelson? Yes
Kendrick Lamar? Bubble
Valerie Simpson? Bubble, but with a kicker - I'll go to "Probably"
Lana Del Rey? Bubble
The Dream? No
Jams and Lewis? Yes.
Bad Bunny?
Bruce Springsteen? Yes
Smokey Robinson? Yes (might be #2 after Dylan, if it isn't Stevie)

Which reminds me -
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were in 2 different bands together and, therefore, those 2 bands have 2 better living American songwriters than a solid dozen on the list.
Fogerty, Seger, hell Glenn Frey has passed, but Don Henley is still alive somewhere, fuming over money he thinks he's owed.
Paul Williams is still alive. Billy Joel. Tom Waits. Neil Young born in Canada but is an American citizen now. Stephen Stills is still alive.
FFS the list gets worse and worse the more I think about it. Like "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" bad.

As I understand it, the list wasn't a #1 through #30 ranking, it was just the top 30 unranked.

It doesn't matter. If you think that Jay-Z or Young Thug is a better songwriter than John Fogerty, Billy Joel or Bob Seger, than I just don't know what to tell you.
(And Steve Miller - forget about him earlier).
There are literally hundreds of better living American songwriters than Bad Bunny.
