This is an interesting one to me, because they didn't try to find someone else who sounded like him or did the same things; their sound noticeably changed. After that it's harder to tell the difference between Wilco the band and another interesting Jeff Tweedy solo project.

thats why IMO it went from Wilco 2.0 > 3.0...

One year [after Ten Inch Men broke up], I was contacted by STP’s manager, Steve Stewart,” explained Dave Coutts to Alternative Nation. “He asked if I was interested in fronting the band. Yes, it overlapped with some of their tour dates, looking back. I am sure I was going to be their plan B. Or maybe just the thing to get Scott sober.”
While Stone Temple Pilots released their most successful record, Purple, in June of 1994, it was around this time that plans for a new frontman began to take shape, with Dave Coutts joining the band in the studio to record some new music, including the track ‘Hide

Rainbow / Ritchie Blackmore fired Ronnie James Dio for not being willing to write more commercial "hit" oriented songs.

Jimmy Chamberlin immediately jumped to mind here.
The Pumpkins were at the height of their powers and the bands popularity took a nose dive after he was fired. Adore was a good album but it was not what the masses wanted from the Pumpkins to follow up MCATIS. He was the hard rock backbone of that band and they never recovered, even when he was quickly rehired. The bloom was off by that point.

Not really a prime but The Allmans brothers got better by kicking Dicky Betts out and having Derek Trucks/Warren Haynes fill the void.
00s Allmans were awesome, especially compared to other aging classic rock acts.

Pete Farndon, Pretenders.
Always thought this was an interesting story. Honeyman-Scott wanted Farndon fired for his drug abuse.
quote:
The situation came to a head when guitarist James Honeyman-Scott threatened to quit the band if Farndon was not fired. On 14 June 1982, band manager Dave Hill, on the orders of Hynde, fired Farndon. Two days after Farndon's dismissal, Honeyman-Scott was found dead of heart failure caused by a cocaine overdose.

Guns ‘n Roses - Izzy Stradlin
He quit, but they were trying to demote him which essentially amounts to being fired. It’s my understanding he made significant contributions in the songwriting role with the band. I could look up his songwriting credits, but am too lazy.

Although it's a bit more complex than a firing. The Stones' infamous manager Andrew Oldham did not want Stewart as part of The Stones' public image. So The Stones said he would not appear in publicity photos or interviews, but could play on records and on stage, discreetly away from the spotlight.
Stewart actually agreed to this -- possibly the only musician on Earth that would have done so ("I would have told them to frick off." - Keith Richards)
I've never been able to determine Stewart's financial stake in the Stones, but I hope he got some sort of percentage.

I believe so...he played, toured, and worked for the Stones all the way until his death in the 80's
