…the songs of theirs you actually really like would only make one album, or less? For me, that band is Alter Bridge. There are several of their songs over the years that are absolutely great, but probably not more than 6-8.

Interpol Turn On The Bright Lights great album start to finish.
Doors Doors and LA Woman and Strange Days great albums start to finish.
Kinks Village Green Perseveration Society might be the greatest single album of all time.

on the list of bands that only have a few “good songs” the kinks would be very near, or at, the bottom

terrible take

I may be able to fill up a greatest hits disc of their music.

...and that's not a bad thing. If a group has 12-15 good songs, that's 12-15 more good songs than a lot of other groups.

A lot of what I always got into, I would buy the albums for 2 or 3 songs that I heard. Then there would be those songs that I didn't care for so much.
Sometime along the line though they grew on me and became my favorites.

what makes a song on an album "filler"?

The band put work in on the album on every song.

Ive never understood this term.

exactly, which is why the "filler" term doesnt make any sense.

The band treats every song the same.

The non-singles are sometimes the best part of the record.

The single isn't always what the band considers "their best song" from the work, it's just the song they picked to be played on the radio to get interest in the album.

Music isn’t work lol. Even women can do it

That’s why I hate when these lib musicians try to tell us how to live

If they want to see what work is like they oughta come burn rods for 80 hours a week

Yes, just because a song wasn't released as a single doesn't exclude it from being a great song

Not true at all, at least in the old days

Phil Spector hated "wasting" good songs on b sides. So he'd release garbage jams on flips, often named after Wrecking Crew session men. However Phil himself kept all writing and publishing rights.

Allegedly "Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye" is so long b/c the label did not want to take airplay away from the intended A side, and thought the length would discourage radio stations from playing it. Despite this DJs flipped it over and it eventually became a #1 hit.

Guess how old I am….
Dave Clark 5
Herman’s Hermits
Vanilla Fudge
Union Gap

The last 2 would probably be an EP, not a full album.
