I’m excited for the new one for many reasons. But mostly because my eleven year old only daughter loves them so much, it’s a beautiful thing to share.
They are on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. They talk more about life than the new album. But they play a couple songs at the end.

I'm excited, although the singles they released so far have been pretty bad. High Steppin and Bang-Bang are just cringeworthy songs. Hopefully these songs are the outliers to this album.

good to know

Hopefully every other song on the album is different from Bang Bang. That is hands down the worst song they have ever made.

I think it will be their worst album yet, especially since they basically deemed it a political album. I’ll take “How Not to Sell Albums” for $200, Alex!

They came out and said that they dont do political stuff and then they come right out with the most direct message ever written. I honestly dont think the rest will be political. They tried with that and failed, hopefully they didnt try with the whole album.

The Carpenter was a great album. Their stuff since then fell into meh territory. Will give this one a stream to see if it's a bounce back.

“We didn’t make a record that was meant to comment on the sociopolitical landscape that we live in,” the band said in a mission statement announcing the new music earlier this summer. “We did, however, make an album that is obviously informed by what is happening now on a grander scale all around us.”

Bang Bang would be a good song with entirely different lyrics. The simple piano is much better than the overproduced stuff that’s been the norm on their last few albums. It’s like something off the Gleam or Mignonette... but those lyrics. Ugh

I'll listen but I'm not expecting much.

True Sadness wasn't very good and the continuation of awful singles (beginning with the similarly cringeworthy "aint no man") doesn't inspire hope.

I honestly don't care much about political music, but my problem is for many modern acts in these genres, as albums grow in protest and politics, they become objectively shittier. See: Head and the Heart, Jason Isbell, and perhaps Avett Brothers.

It's almost like these groups write really compelling music while searching for success and sorting out their lives, then they achieve it, feel compelled to write "meaningful" music beyond their personal melancholy, and it just...sucks.

The fact that they basically posted a disclaimer on social media about it proves my point that they’re worried about the fanbase’s reaction to the tone of the album. The simple truth is, most people don’t listen to music or a specific artist to hear a different political point of view. It’s a risky move. I hope I’m wrong and the album is great.

I hadn’t seen the track list until this morning. I’m worried.

"Bleeding White"
"Tell the Truth"
"We Americans"
"Long Story Short"
"C-Sections and Railroad Trestles"
"High Steppin"
"When You Learn"
"Bang Bang"
"Better Here"
"New Woman's World"
"Who Will I Hold"
"Locked Up"
"It's Raining Today"
