Blaze—I’m glad to hear you kids in the Iberia region were spared the brunt of Ida (somewhat!).

Hahnville, however…

a total loss—it rained in every room of the house. All gear in the main rig is drenched.

But hey—whatcha gonna do? Cry about it? Or fire up the genny, turn on a window unit, and give the Marantz a long overdue opportunity to show off its 15wpc command of the Zu full range drivers?

I chose the latter…

Blaze—this ones for or you…

Grateful Dead, “Europe ‘72”…3 LP, Warner Bros., 1972.

Now to start gutting this place.

Damn, I'm so sorry to see that.

Is anything salvageable?

I admire your spirit because that is one sad fricking sight. My God, you’ve got some serious equipment.

Marco,

First I'm glad that you and your family are safe. Gear can be replaced and I'm betting that you are well-insured. So sad to see that damage.

That sucks, dude! How did your vinyl make out? That would be my bigger concern over the gear...

Correct.

I thought it was all OK as I ran my hands across the fronts of all the LPs and they were dry. Later on that night, after I was completely exhausted, I got the little rig going so I could sit alone by the light of a solitude lamp while listening to Space Wrangler, and ponder why I live in Louisiana.

As I started to pull some LPs out, they felt heavy—well shite!—about 40% (my guesstimate, as I really didn’t have the energy to start pulling them all out) seem to have taken water. They were all in plastic 4-mil thick outer protective sleeves, so I venture considerable rainwater flowed down the back wall which the built-in cabinets/shelves are built against.

The crappy part is that 60% of those are limited or numbered runs, or 200g 45rpm versions (MoFi, Analog Productions, Speakers Corner, Classic Records Quiex LP, test pressings, Japanese pressings, etc.) that are now unobtanium. I guess I won’t know the full extent until I start pulling them one by one.

The problem now is that I have nowhere to put them once I go through them—everything is still wet throughout the house (all interior walls and ceilings took on considerable water), and it is raining heavily again now and my tarps aren’t up yet. The tarp fella is in my neighborhood, and I should have them up by tomorrow—my entire roof needs to be tarped.

Since I will try to end on a positive…the Classic Records (now defunct), 200g, 2006 first ever reissue of the Led Zeppelin catalog is OK!! (the Classic Records reissue is the Holy Grail of any LZ reissue). If you want sticker shock, go to eBay and enter “Classic Records vinyl Led Zeppelin 45rpm”!!

I still need to check on The Who, Hendrix, and Peter Gabriel Classic Records soon, as I have those complete catalogs on the shelves too, amongst others…just too many other things taking precedent right now

How much vinyl do you have? And do you have a tally yet as to what amount may be lost?

Man Marco, I feel for ya.

Prayers

Damn Marco, sad to see that. It’s like the ceiling opened up right above your rig.

As for the records, while the covers and sleeves maybe screwed at least the audio on the vinyl should be unaffected.

Best wishes. Time to let your insurance do it’s thang.

Yeah. The moisture would wick to the cardboard. Vinyl would be fine but the artwork not so much. I had a flood in my basement a few years ago and suffered damage to the artwork on about 250 LPs. That hurt a lot. Mostly original pressings from the 1970s that I took really good care of.

About 2500 of them are of the “nice’ variety. All in all, all equipment and media, about $300K.

Damn...Don't know what to say. Glad that you and your family are okay, evacuating was probably the proper choice. But contemplating that loss is hard. I know the time you spent on designing that room and the passion you have for the for the hobby, and effort you have spent assembling all of that equipment and music collection. I was hoping to get to hear your new speaker system on the main rig and see you R2R additions.

Was anything powered up? I know I leave my solid state equipment power all the time. If it wasn't powered can you desiccate everything and recover a portion?

I know it can be replaced but I also know that for you it was a labor of love. It's heartbreaking to see.

... big loss

No telling how much time and effort just went down the drain. Really hate to see that. Hopefully some of the irreplaceable can be salvaged.

If salvageable, I’m guessing all the Mc gear will be sent to Binghamton, NY for service & repairs ? Anyone you trust locally , or go straight to the experts. Praying any losses are minimal and all components can be repaired “as new” .
