Question please ....

Just Amazon'ed a Onkyo TX-RZ830 only to find it had no HD-FM. It was last year's on sale for 499, but it listed for 1399.00, so I'm a bit astonished the radio won't pick up more than my 20year old AudioSource pre-amp.

Is this normal?

And if not what might I look at next... they said send it back.. no problem. Just wanting to basically upgrade from near stone-age. Wanting something to go with a pair of old but intact (non-distorting) SMG-Magnaplanars and Acurus-200 amp... something that'll allow me to do this century tech.

This statement makes no sense...

What are you asking?

ETA...

OK--i think i know what you mean--picking up radio stations?

FWIW---old school terrestrial FM sounds better than HD radio...sort of like LPs sounding more natural and dynamic than CD.

When you understand how the transmission waves work, it makes sense. the trick is to get a large antenna and put it either outside..20' up, or in the attic--the old arrow type antenna--there is no such thing as an HD antenna--an antenna is an antenna is an antenna.

then just run a cable coax from the antenna to the tuner/receiver. you will need a small converter to go from cable coax to whatever the back input of the tuner/receiver has--look at PartsExpress.com

Remember--HD radio must be deciphered on the receiving end--thus adding more crap in the chain.

Terrestrial FM (old school FM stereo) is about as pure and clean analog audio as it gets.

When you get a good antenna and set it up properly, you will understand.

I always disengage HD radio in my cars--regular FM sounds better.

You would be stunned at just how clear WWOZ (and about 20 other FM stations) comes in on my tuner at the house...zero hiss, zero crackle, zero drifting.

Trying to say ...

... was really surprised to find that a Onkyo (Pioneer) A/V receiver from 2018, in mid-tier price range, wouldn't all have HD-FM. That it'd get no more FM reception wise than my 'OLD AS THE HILLS' twenty year old preamp/(AM-FM Digital-Tuner) picks up.

Wondering is this was strange for 2019? I never thought to look past all it's many-other features. No biggy - was just curious?

.... you got it

Yep, my old tv antennae is about 25' up as well. It's only way to get any local college stations around here. Thanks that certainly makes sense - bandwidth/wave-length wise.

Turntable related post, didn't seem worthy of its own thread.

I'm getting an old Pioneer PL-570 (late '70's with walnut veneer base) back in working condition, and a question on the lubrication - original lube appears to be some sort of grey (graphite?) grease, but I haven't been able to find anything close.

ETA - nothing mentioned in service manual.

Any help appreciated.

White lithium grease is fine.

The original was white grease as well—it is gray and “grapiitey” due to millions of revolutions and microscopic metal shavings mixing in.

Kinda like yellow motor oil going in and 10k miles later it is black.

This grey lube is on all the moving parts of the auto-play mechanism (PL-570 has a separate drive motor for these functions), including metal-to-metal, metal-to-plastic and plastic-to-plastic surfaces and wear points.

Probably something Pioneer had made just for them 40+ years ago.

I had white grease in the bearing of my PL-40...it was slightly gray after years of use.

Yours may be different. Mine is from around 1970.

Can anyone help with this annoying issue I have with my system?

Problem: when listening to records, occasionally the volume (and maybe even quality?) shoots up for about 5 seconds and then goes back down.

What could this be? Misaligned cartridge? Some faulty wiring with the turntable? Something goofy happening in the receiver?

I can’t determine if the issue is with my receiver or turntable. It’s driving me crazy.

Cleaning a few LP’s this afternoon...

Deftones “Adrenaline”, 1995

Forgot how hard this album goes- when everyone was so hooked on Korn, I was blasting these guys. Got to meet them a few times during the early years, still have my signed CD copy. Amazing they’re still together (minus Chi) and still putting out quality stuff. Love how they evolved over the years. This is an in your face, rockin’ arse record!!

Marco, how does this beginner on a budget setup look to you? Do I need anything else to get started?

Pro Ject Debut Carbon
QUAD Vena II Integrated Amplifier
ELAC - Debut 2.0 F5.2 Tower Speakers
AUDIOQUEST - Type 4 (Bananas, 8ft) Cable
AUDIOQUEST - Evergreen (RCA-to-RCA, 0.6m) Cable

Been reading this thread, it has a wealth of knowledge

I don’t believe the Quad has a phono stage. If not, you will need one (also known as a phono pre amp).

There are numerous one available from $79 to $89,000...depends on how good you wanna get. If you plan on never moving to a moving coil cart, you can probably just get a phono pre amp with moving magnet stage (MM) for a bit cheaper than one that offers both.

All else seems good to go.
