I don’t believe the Quad has a phono stage. If not, you will need one (also known as a phono pre amp).

It has a built-in MM phono preamplifier

Also, always get at least 1 meter cables....trust me.

Yeah, why is this? I had an audio guy tell me the same thing.

Because as soon as you move a piece of gear, the cable won’t be long enough and you will need to buy a longer one....and you WILL move gear to a different shelf/stand/rack at some point in time.

I really recommend a minimum of 2 meter cables, but I also know I am on a college based board, so I am aware that some don’t have the extra $$ to spend, so I suggested 1 meter.

The shortest cable on my main rig is 3 meters...if I ever want to move something from the right rack to the left rack, any shorter length and it wouldn’t be long enough to drop down to the floor, travel over to the other rack, then go back up to the component. I don’t like cables draping over from one rack to the other in mid air—looks terrible...I go down to the floor and then over to the other rack...thus longer cables.

Ah. Makes sense. I thought it had something to do with audio quality.

QUAD Vena II Integrated Amplifier ELAC - Debut 2.0 F5.2 Tower Speakers

Marco is the expert here and I’m a newb for the most part (I’ve learned a lot from him and research), but you may want to think about this.... I have a quad vena pushing a pair Vandersteen 1Cis. The vandys are more efficient than the ELACs. 90db vs 86db to be exact. I love the sound I get, but you may want to look into an amp with a little more arse end to push those ELACs. The quad is 45wpc. You are going to have to turn the knob well to the right to get after it if you like to listen to it loud.

Again, Marco is the man to talk to. But, what you’re looking at is something I dealt with before buying a couple years ago. Great versatile amp though! Can be used as a preamp for future use too.

Yep...correct....good catch.

It will play music, but not with a lot of punch when you turn it up. I forget just how inefficient ELAC is...they are good, but drink the watts.

You may consider Emotiva amp and pre for more power.

What about the Rega Brio integrated amp with the ELACs?

It still doesn't pack much power. At the $1000 price point I'd look at something more like this Cambridge Audio CXA80 Integrated Amplifier.

BTW, Dedicated Audio is fantastic.

This peachtree is a little more than 1k. I think Marco has one though. 150wpc.

So a couple months back, I purchased a new table with my first ever MC cart. I started on the 100 ohm setting, but initially found it to be a tad bright for my liking, so I set it on 47K and left it there. Well a few days ago I went back to 100 ohms and have been playing a bunch of stuff on this load. Oh my, the detail coming out of these grooves is nothing short of amazing. And it doesn’t really sound bright to me anymore, just detailed as all hell, with a big open, airy soundstage. Maybe because I’d never used that setting on my preamp before it needed time to “settle in”?? Anyway, it’s quite an eye-opener and a significant step-up for me.

Went from an Ortofon Blue MM to a Clearaudio Concept MC by the way...

I am looking at upgrading from an older AT lp120 to one of the following:

Pro-ject Debut Carbon DC Esprit ($599)

OR

Rega Planar 2 ($675)

I know the Pro-ject comes with a better cartridge but I have heard that the Rega uses much better overall materials. What do you guys think is the better table between these 2?

Not sure which one is the best... but the ortofon red is a $100 cart. So, if you prefer the rega you can upgrade to that cart for not a whole lot of money. That’s assuming it’s upgradeable. The entry level pro-jects have a great rep though.

I’ll throw this out there as well.... may be interested in moving my VPI Nomad. It has the ortofon red on it, w/ a built in phono, all original box etc.

Another good thing about the red is that you can upgrade to the blue by just changing out the stylus. You just pop one off and the other on and it’s cheaper since you are only buying the stylus vs the whole cart. You can also do that with the bronze and black as well. Although, ortofon does not recommend it and stated you should change the whole cart out when moving to the bronze or black. Matt Weisfield (owner) at VPI told me they have popped the black stylus on the red body and it worked great.

Typically, you can swap out the red/blue and you can swap out the bronze/black. They all will fit on the same body though.

GynoSandberg...

Check this out... LINK

Ayre Acoustics makes solid gear. They are a very active company located in Boulder, CO.

This is a pretty good deal and may fit your budget for an integrated amp.

You ever get the situation worked out with focal on replacing the tweeters? I think it was the tweeters. I think you were having issues with them being able to supply replacement parts for your speakers that weren’t that old?

I’m curious because I ended up going with the focal arias a few months ago, and while I haven’t had any issues, I’m wondering if their customer service was able to get you straightened out.

I spoke with Michaèl, who I’ve known for a long time, at Audio Plus Services in Quebec—they are the importers for Focal in North America.

The reason I can’t get new ones is that they just don’t have any more left in stock, and they did a small design change on the new model (Beryllium IAL2)—so all the jigs and machinery changed at the factory. They don’t mass produce the older one any more, but they will rebuild them, and promise they will be just like new.

The only issue is they wait to get a few pair of broken ones in so they can do them all at the same time, which usually takes a few months—thus the 3-4 month turnaround time they quoted me.

I am definitely having them fixed—the speaker is well worth the repair cost—and I still like the speaker.

I just need to physically pull them out of the cabinets and get them boxed and shipped off to France...and since they are in another room which I don’t go into much, I keep forgetting g to do it in the evening. Maybe I’ll get it done tomorrow during Hurricane Barry!

I will say—the last two months, these new loudspeakers have grown on me. With the addition of subs 3 & 4, and the removal of the couch and movement of the listening position another 3’ back, this new rig is starting to take flight.

The wall of sound is huge...watching live concerts is better than ever.

Well that’s good news, even if it is a bit of a wait. And yeah, I can’t imagine the sound in that room.
