Great post, because I’ll now watch high fidelity again this weekend. Reminded me it’s been too long!

I went up in the attic last night to check on the condition of the albums I have stored up there. They're all in pristine condition. Looks like it's time to build out that system. This is the first one I pulled out. There's a lot of vinyl in that attic. 500-600 albums of the 70's and 80's mostly.

What is everyone using to post pics now? I had an app called Picup that was easy to use and that dude just is blank now. I’ve tried imgur and it’s a pain in the arse and I can’t ever remember which link to use to post.
Do I need an imgur account or something? Or is there another app?
Was listening to a couple albums I picked up at Waterloo in Austin in my allotted shopping time...

I typically use imgur these days. Photobucket is apparently old and tired.

How do you figure out which link to copy?
I feel like a dumbass....

Hit copy on Direct Link. I usually choose large size.

One of my finds in the used section at Waterloo records!

So my number FINALLY got called...Willy Hermann is the best of the best when it comes to rebuilding Nakamichi cassette decks. He was, back in the cassette heyday, the national service director for Nakamichi N.A. The problem now is that he is back-logged for repairs/rebuilds anywhere from 9 to 12 months. You have to “get in the cue”, and when he calls, you ship it to him.
So after almost a year waiting, my number was called, and I sent it off to California a couple weeks ago, and it arrived ack today.
Willy doesn’t do simple repairs such as belt replacement and idler wheel replacement. If he accepts the deck, it is for a total rebuild—all motors pulled down, cleaned, reassembled, and all heads realigned and calibrated (see attached list of work done!).
The reason for this is that these decks, built in 1986-1988, are now pushing 30 years old, and he says if he just does a simple fix, something else will go down within a few months of use—and I agree with him—-so it got a total rebuild...it is also now warrantied by him for 2 years.
I gotta say, this deck in the big rig, playing a Maxell MA metal cassette (music was recorded on it via a JVC TD-V 66 cassette deck around 1989)—-sounds pretty damn good!
Even pre recorded cassettes seem to be holding their own too!
On now...
Thompson Twins—“Here’s To Future Days”...Arista Records, cassette, 1985.

I haven’t played this album in forever. Usually I listen to Harvest or On the Beach. I had forgotten how much I love this record, and how much “southern man” kicks.

I hope Mr. Young will remember, the Southern Man don’t need him around anyhow.

Question - Do you just have all your old cassettes from the 80s or are you buying new ones?

Thoughts on Musical Fidelity gear? I'm thinking about getting one of their phono preamps and intergrated amps for a 2 channel setup. I'd probably pair it with Dynaudio Special Forty bookshelf speakers. Haven't thought about what sub to get but REL is on my mind.
TIA for thoughts and comments.

I have about 100 pre-recorded albums on cassette, all of which were purchased over the last couple years or so. I go to Amoeba Music in L.A. a couple times a year, and they usually have a couple thousand used for sale for around $2-3 apiece.
Some artists will release a new record on cassette to appease the hipster crowd, so I do have a couple new Ryan Adams albums on cassette (they don’t sound as good as I hoped they would—some that I have from 25 years ago are better).
Most that I pick up are 1978-1994 era stuff. I buy them just because...a nostalgia thing. And, I am now amazed at how a really high end deck can bring the most out of a cassette (notice—I didn’t say cassettes are sonically awesome—just that this Nakamichi deck is the best I have ever heard a pre-recorded cassette sound).
I do not have any pre-recorded cassettes from my high school years (‘85-‘90) as I was an early adopter to CD—I had the first commercially released Sony CD player in 1985. I went right from buying LPs in 6th & 7th grade to buying CDs from 8th grade (1985) onward.
I did, however, have a couple cassette decks in my high school era audio rig, as I made a bunch of my own cassettes. I was the guy who had all the music, and CD players in cars were not out yet, so I would record my CDs onto cassettes for when we went out on Friday and Saturday nights.
Since I was an audio geek back then too, I only bought metal bias blank tape (Type IV) from the likes of Maxell, TDK, Denon, and Sony. I never used “normal” position (Type I) tape. I used a JVC deck, an Aiwa deck, and later, a Sony ES deck (I couldn’t afford a Nakamichi deck back then—they were $1850 in 1986!). All my decks were single well. If I wanted to dub a cassette, I did it in real time through the preamp from one deck to the other. These cassettes sound a hell of a lot better than any pre-recorded one on this Nak deck.

Hello Marco,
Would you be interested in renting out your Nakamichi CR-7A for a small transfer project to an audio engineer?
Not only would I take care of your deck as if it were my own, I'll have it re-serviced by Willy Hermann after I'm finished with my project. That way, it will be in the same or better condition once you receive it again.
How does that sound?
By the way, your media room is amazing looking!

Btw been meaning to ask you if you recommend a certain product/method to clean/polish VPI aluminum platters? Mine arrived with its fair share of fingerprints and smudges, would like to get it looking new. Wasn’t sure if there were specific products to avoid due to residue left behind and getting on records.
Also, I notice you use tidal too. Have you had any issues with their mobile app? About 1.5 weeks ago the app just stopped working on my iPhone when connected to ATT LTE network. Works fine when I’m on WiFi, it acts like it’s permanently buffering when connected to LTE. and I know it’s nit the LTE speeds because I’ve measured those at anywhere from 25-50 mbps, and all other streaming apps work fine on LTE. Just thought I’d ask, since I don’t know anyone else who has tidal.
