re: As purely a musician, where do you rank Prince all time?

If "Kiss" was released for the first time today, it would SOAR to #1, just like it did 40 years ago. BTW, I'm not talking about a posthumous release, I meant if he was 28yo today like he was in 1986 and released it.

If you haven't heard his non hits, a lot of them are better than what you always hear on the radio.
What's the best example or two you have of a mid-80s deep cut that is actually good?
It's a shame that Purple Rain never actually topped the charts here. THAT is actually great.
And it's been litigated in multiple threads here - and fairly recently - but his Beatles solo that everyone always slobbers over is, IMO, fairly representative of what I find off-putting about him: technically proficient, overly showy, not really adding anything of merit.

Bono, Trent Reznor, Michael Jackson, Harry Connick Jr, Rick James, Madonna and David Bowie are among several performers that never really liked him.
Some of it was personal but a few referred to him as overrated.

One of the very best…

Included in that "everyone always slobbers over solo" would be multiple all time great musicians. Think Clapton and others. Tom Petty raved about it and played it on his XM radio show multiple times daily until his own death.
17 days, she's always in my hair, automatic, irresistible bitch, erotic city, lady cab driver, how come don't call me, pink cashmere, and dozens of others.
It's IMPOSSIBLE for me to name a favorite Prince song. Two of my all time favorites are The Ballad of Dorothy Parker and Do U Lie?

Rick James and Mike was clearly personal and fueled by jealousy.
Jackson was INFINITELY more popular than Prince (hell more than anyone but Elvis), but he knew he wasn't anywhere near the musician Prince was.

Also, you might want to rethink that Bowie viewpoint.
They almost collaborated on Heathen, and Bowie hung out and jammed with Prince at Paisley Park on a few occasions. Very possibly some of your favorites did as well and would completely disagree with your analysis of how "shitty " his music was.
Prince invited and hosted hundreds of musicians from all genres at Paisley over the 30 years he owned it, and most of those session weren't publicized.

Yea, just never impressed.

quote:I don't have anything against who he was as a person and it's obviously he was extremely famous and respected by man musicians. I'm sure it would have been awesome to have been a fly on the wall at any of those sessions.

However, nothing changes how overall uninspiring the catalogue is. It's weird how his best singles didn't make #1. No Little Red Corvette, 1999 or Raspberry Beret. Instead, we get Kiss and Cream. ugh

Little Red Corvette
I thought that was actually a pretty good tune. I thought there were a couple of good tunes scattered over Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999.
I didn't like anything after that to be totally honest.
I actually owned several of those albums back in the day.

Except for When Doves Cry I couldn't stand his music, but the thread is asking best musician. Not best guitarist, or best keyboard player etc. It doesn't get any more musician than writing and recording an entire album completely by yourself. There aren't a whole lot of people that are even capable of doing that, so I'd say he's up there for sure
