Are you a lyrics-first or sound-first listener of music?

Read an article that depicted different music listening types.
Just this week, I bludgeoned the lyrics of 2 songs I have been listening to for decades:
(with my wife laughingly correcting me)
Your Love - The Outfield
Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks
I’m sound all the way! Damn. Wife is lyrics. Makes for fun road trips. For her.

Sound. I don't give a crap about lyrics.

Both need to be good, or I move on.

quote:I agree. I love complex meaningful lyrics. And the music needs to just as complex. Although sometimes the lyrics can be very simple and the same with the music. It all depends. And sometimes It’s just a feeling I get when I hear it
Both need to be good, or I move on.

The hook has to grab me first, but lyrics complete the song.

Sound first . But, the singer's voice can sometimes ruin a good sounding song.

I think the biggest lyrics-first star was Bob Dylan.
The biggest voice-first star was Judy Collins. She could sing names from a phone book and it would sound great.

I think that it is always sound first for everyone. You can still love lyrics, but they exists within a sound. Songs are like beautiful women. You like what you see first, then you discover their character.

Sound....nothing against lyrics but much of the music I enjoy doesn't have any.
