Music is much too personal an experience to call anyone the best ever without some sort of qualification, e.g. musicianship, showmanship, style of music. However, the Beatles are without question the most popular and influential rock and roll band ever. Given those accomplishments it is hard to call them overrated.

Is where overrated starts creeping in.

The Beatles are objectively great IMO, but for whatever reason I don't really listen to their songs.
If their music is great then why don't you listen to it?

I understand their significance, I couldn't care less about them, however.

the Beatles also opened up a lot of the Visual Effects of R&R. I do not recall big concerts until they cam along

This pretty much settles it imo. I was at the bar the other night and I didn't hear one Beatles song the entire time I was there.
The Beatles are terrible
Yeah, and all the music being played at that party was so classic! (sarcasm intended).
Beatles aren't party music. Their influence cannot be denied--ask any of your own musical heroes. I listen to them all the time, but I'm "older" than many of you.

They came to America when I was in Grammar School and were popular all during my High School years. While I have listened to a lot of different music over the years and enjoy most of it, I still listen to The Beatles; the rest of the British Invasion groups; and MoTown. In my opinion, The Beatles are not overrated.

Then you don't think they're great.

No doubt that the Beatles were musical geniuses. No arguments here that they impacted music and the music business in profound ways. Listening to the music from 61 62 63 will give context to how huge those changes where. It's also important to realize where the U.S. was at that time. Kennedy was assassinated just a few months prior and the country was still in shock and mourning. The Beatles benefited from being in the right place at the right time. They where the perfect antidote for a country that had just lost its innocence. Those conditions and their talent assured them top 40 status but they held up their end of the bargain by writing and recording music that will be listened to and studied forever. Much like Bach or Beethoven. Greatest of all time? Don't really know. But I do know they're on a very short list of contenders.

I'm 30 and a week doesn't go by that I don't listen to The Beatles. I will even play some at the bar if they are on the jukebox. You are right though it's not party music. I don't think I ever heard a Beatles song at any college party.

The Beatles were a pop band. Far and away the best pop band ever.

I fricking HATE Hey Jude. I don't really know why but I really hate it. That, and Hotel California are my two most hated songs. They literally make me want to cut my ears off.

Because Michael Jackson isn't a band?

No because he made music inferior to the Beatles.

Because, overall, the Stones had much more filler music. Seemed to be quantity over quality. I like them, but I don't think they are comparable. Is it only because of the time frame when the music was being made?
This a million times. B sides push the Beatles over everyone else.
