FWIW, I am extremely biased. I like the Beatles too much, listen to them everyday. I don't want to sound like a douche, I like them a lot and I do not consider them overrated. Stones are great too. I have always thought the sound of the Rolling stones was much better and more fun, but I like the lyrics and experimentation of the Beatles music. They are both great in their own ways.
For me it is best summed up as: I would play Stones at a party and I would play Beatles if I am listening by myself.

Oh don't get me wrong. I am a Beatles fan and fully acknowledge their greatness. I was just trying to explain how some could come about comparing them

as delusional as bobbygheigh was, there are some glimpses of truth to that though. But it doesn't define how great their music is. Beatles are a great band to listen to but not a good band to party to. That has a lot to do with the appreciation of live shows too. There are several bands that I can listen to over and over again but I don't have a desire to see them live. Especially not try to get close to the stage

Yes! Absolutely and unequivocally. They were different at the time. Dressed up and clean cut, made the girlies scream. But, their music had no real soul touching depth, and has no lasting effect to it. There is not one Beatles song that I would ever download onto my phone

The Stones were great at what they did, but they never achieved the majestic cohesiveness of the final medley of Abbey Road , the intoxicating psychedelic drone of "I Am the Walrus" , the game-changer that was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , the mindfrick of "Tomorrow Never Knows" , the gorgeous harmonies littered throughout Rubber Soul, the bassline in "Something" , a sprawling journey throughout many genres on The White Album, etc... One thing the Stones did do that the Beatles never did was a successful foray into disco with stuff like "Miss You" and "Emotional Rescue." Not sure if the fab four could have pulled that off.

Now, "Say Say Say" by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, yes I would download that, plus I like the video. Actual Beatles songs though, NO!

I prefer the Stones and others now, but I am of the generation that watched the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I think you had to have been the right age to really appreciate the Beatles. I was 11 when they were on Ed (Now think about the age group their managers were targeting). You can't believe how popular they were. They put Brylcreem out of business. You got sent home from school if your bangs were too long. They put Elvis on the back burner. Their songs were everywhere. They had 2 hit movies. They had a Saturday morning cartoon show. Most of the people of my generation either like the Beatles or at least respect them. I remember when the played in New Orleans. I was too young to go, but my a-hole neighbor who was 2 years older than me got to go.

Without American Bluesman like old Muddy Waters,Howlin Wolf,etc.... ,that Clapton, the Stones & others worshipped (and Zepplin ripped off) would not have existed . Period.
Although I do not like this music much I always respected how well theses young British guys treated these old Bluesman who young Black teens had no use for(embarrassed by them perhaps) . This was literally young Black kids 'grandpa music' as most of these Bluesman were in their 50's & 60's at the time. They were not as musically sophisticated as Jazz legends like Ellington, Monk, Miles Davis, Coltrane,Mingus nor smooth as Soul artist like Sam Cooke,etc.....But to young British kids being exposed to American Blues it was soul stirring/inspiring.
The Beatles 1st wish in America was to meet "Muddy Waters"(which they travelled to Chicago & did). The Stones naming themselves after the song "Rollin Stone"(Muddy) & subsequently the magazine.
Eric Clapton & others forming super bands just for the honor to record as back up/studio musicians with these old guys.
Not much use for their music(when I can simply listen to Blues) ,but I always appreciated the adoration/respect the Brits showed for the old guys. Introduced them to a young (White) audience & money they would have never experienced otherwise.

I think it is safe to say that. I think there are many others which you could also say that for, but they seem to have one of the best arguments for best band ever along with three or four others probably.
