Their big songs really aren’t even that great. Instrumentally they’re middle of the road and one of their main hits is a Bowie cover. Foo Fighters are a better band than Nirvana

I thought this was a pretty common thought

Sidenote: I wish Dave Grohl would've shot himself instead of Cobain.

Of course they are. They’re not important for their incredible music so much as how they popularized a genre of music and ushered in a major shift in both the identity of rock music and pop culture in general. Also, they get extra pop culture points because Kurt died young.

Their music isn’t bad, it’s just simple. Simple isn’t bad either. In fact, at the time Nirvana released that music, it was a near revolutionary change of pace from everything else that was popular.

As an 8th grader, their music was so raw and angsty. As an adult, I don’t find it to have much depth.

I feel like Nirvana is underrated on this board just because of how often I see them called overrated here.

Part of that is due to the very out of mainstream tastes of this board. Most people on this board fall into one of the following molds:
Worships Pink floyd and hates everything not heard on classic rock fm radio. Thinks millennials are still in hs and that rock n roll is dead except when hs kids cover Heart songs.
All about alternative country like Jason Isbel, American Aquarium, and Stergil Simpson. Also loves pre-rock n roll country and believes Eric Church is a bro-country poser :spits tobacco:
Only listens to stoner metal, sludge metal, and other stuff that sounds like Black Sabbath played through an 8 bit video cartridge.
Jam band bros. Dave Matthews and JRAD fans debating Widespread Panic and Disco Biscuits while recalling the glory days of banging girls on shrooms outside a mid-90’s grateful dead concert in the back of a white jeep wrangler while Spin Doctors played on the radio.

They are seen as overrated because Smells Like Teen Spirit is so overplayed. The rest of Nevermind and Bleach are pretty good and better than 95% of modern alt rock.

On this board it makes perfect sense.

I don't see how it can be debated. One huge original hit. A bunch of mediocre songs, and when people list their best stuff, several covers come up. Look, I like them, but they are vastly overrated.

I did when they first came out. While I enjoyed their first record, I thought it was just fun. Once they did the unplugged set I realized how good their music really was. With all the distortion and noise (which I like) in their produced records it's easy to miss the nuances of their musicianship. While they were not the same level of talent as Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam, they were still very good.

If you like bland, run of the mill, cookie cutter pop rock, then more power to you.

both are weak in the grand scheme of music, but I’d rather listen to foo than nirvana

They are almost singlehandedly responsible for changing the face of rock music. I still listen to their stuff pretty often.

I look at it from the perspective of how different their sound was when they emerged. It was cool then and music really changed in that direction. I don't think they're the best band ever, but I have a healthy amount of respect for their music.

agreed

They are weird in the sense that the blew up in '91... but their music isn't for everyone and at almost any other point in history, they would not have been as big... Bleach was a fantastic record, but no one would have ever predicted that their next record would have had the cultural impact it did..

Overrated a little bit. As mentioned their music was simple and heavily punk influenced. Sub Pop had a lot of simple bands and some that weren’t.

Also Nirvana did not age well. It’s a snapshot in time. I really have to be in a mood to listen to it. And had Kurt lived they would not have aged well. His vocals were all about raw screaming and wailing. His chords would never have lasted and neither would our angst.

We will of course never know how they’d change with time. They’d probably break up. Bassist isn’t even in music anymore I believe. Kurt would be doing solo stuff that MIGHT be interesting. Dave would still have started Foo Fighters.

Basically they were a 3-piece band that ain’t Rush.

There is no doubt they caught lightning in a bottle.

Had Andy Wood and Kurt Cobain not died, where would Seattle music have gone?

This. I'll admit there is some nostalgia involved, but their best stuff never made it to the radio. They were just scratching the surface of their potential when Kurt died.
