I know a lot of people here despise rap, but I have a real soft spot for 90s rap. There were lots of eras just in this short time frame. You had early 90s which was pretty raw like NWA, then g-funk, east coast / west coast battles, No Limits dominance, OutKast, Eminem entering the scene. It’s crazy how much tbe genre changed.

What is your favorite era or group?

I loved g-funk. Started with The Chronic but Doggystyle may be the best rap album ever. Throw in Warren G and Nate Dogg’s contributions and it’s hard to top.

I still love me some later 90s stuff like early OutKast, early No Limit, the one off “I got 5 on it.”

I forgot about Bone Thugs. They were almost like g-funk but more R&B and cleaner. I loved that as well. It’s just another interesting era of rap in the 90s.

I stand pretty firmly that Doggystyle is the best debut album of all time. Appetite for Destruction and Weezer (Blue) are up there for my generation as well, but that G-Funk sound was so listenable, and so fresh from start to finish.

I love 90s rap. I don’t even bother listening to any rap from the last 15 years or so.

It's really hard to beat. Things exploded all at once.

Within 3 years, you had the solo debuts of Dr. Dre, Snoop, 2Pac, Biggie, Nas, Outkast, UGK, Bone Thugs, Wu Tang, The Fugees and Jay-Z. Then you had Mystikal, DMX and Eminem on deck.

No one would look at you funny if you compiled a top 10 list just of those guys. Guys like Ice Cube were still going strong, it was an incredible time.

Hell, you even had Goodie Mob, Three Six Mafia, Xzibit, Warren G (his first album is incredible) and the early years of Lil Wayne. The 90's had so many great artists breaking out all at once.

And yes, I feel old saying this. Eff mumble rap.

Dr. Dre and Snoop did the Chronic and Doggystyle back to back in less than a year.

If you consider The Chronic a solo debut, they are both in the conversation for greatest debut ever.

I liked older school NWA and Public Enemy.

Geto Boys and 2 Live Crew started in 80s but bled into 90s.

Tribe Called Quest. Midnight Marauders and Low End Theory. They paved the way for a lot of these other artists.

Late 90s but that 1 Blackstar record is amazing

The Chronic and Doggystyle are both top 10 of all time for me

I’d have to think long and hard which is better.

I still know every word of every song

I'm even gonna throw out De La Soul and PM Dawn.

yeah, early 90's rap/hip hop was the golden age IMO. You still had the late 80's guys hitting their stride and the East coast /West Coast thing going. it's really the only era I can listen. Nostalgia or not, it's the best.

I was around it most when ghetto D and 400 degrees came out.

Never cared too much for it. And at least with southern louisiana rap, I kinda new what they were talking about. at the time, my guitar player and best friend was a teenage cocaine addict who always played it.

Yes! A Tribe Called Quest, WTC, Dre & Snopp, Mobb Deep, Nate Dogg, Notorious B.I.G. just to name a few.... I love 90s rap.

Most rap (but not all) released today is terrible. I really don't care for new school.

The No-Limit era was pretty huge. They seemed to be the biggest label for a few years, even getting Snoop to sign with them. I loved Ghetto-D and a few of the other albums, but for the most part, those songs don't have much staying power for me; however, I still think "Bourbons and Lacs" is great and one of the best songs to come out of No Limit.

E-40 gets a lot of hate because of his style, but he has always had an original style.

Also Thug Life (2-pac’s group) was pretty damn good on their one album they put out.
