My problem with including Prince is, it's never been a secret.

Go back and read the "great guitarists" threads on here.

And see how often he's mentioned by somebody NOT named Roaad.

So, if Hendrix were a modern day quitarist, he would have stopped evolving and improving?
Who knows?

Maybe he sells out and goes Vegas.

Maybe he mellows and stagnates, ala Clapton.

Maybe he drops off the earth, ala Dylan.

Nobody knows.

What I do know is that there are a frickload of guys right now, that are better than he was.

He was an innovator, sure. But he is so far from the GOAT, that it irritates me to hear it so frequently.

Bill Gates was innovative in his ability to steal other people's work, and market it effectively.

I would never consider him the greatest programmer. . .even in the 80's.

Bad example.

For drummers, I don't get why Tre Cool doesn't get more credit. He is one of the best drummer's in America. . .but will never be known as such for the band he is in.

whoa now. I'll admit he's good but I wouldn't go as far as to say one of the best. Underrated, sure...but 99% of all drummers are underrated.

I submit that no guitar genius has ever looked more pimp than Prince in that video. I love the look on his face. He was having as much fun as my kids at Disney World.

I've honestly been surprised that that video hasn't been posted on the MB more. He's insanely good. Saw him live when I was younger.

My point is that it is difficult to compare people from different eras.

Also, in reading the threads comparing guitarists and ranking them, I just completely disagree with people's assessments. I'm not a Hendrix fanboy by any stretch, but I think the actual music has to be a more important part, not just being able to sit there and do fricking tricks.

That part is so over-rated. You really think if John Mayer and Hendrix had a guitar duel, at some point Hendrix would be like, "frick it, I just can't do that."

I don't think so. There are people out there we have never even heard of that can probably match the greats lick for lick. (and I love Mayer, Prince and most of the other guitar studs.)

The ones I don't like are the Vai's and Satriani's of the world, that just know how to shred, but don't have a single piece of originality or songwriting ability in their bodies.

I would.

He has the best timing of any drummer I have seen.

But he's in a band that doesn't let him cut loose.

He's a madman live.

I'll also add. . .every individual member of the Beatles.

People pick and choose, but all 4 were amazing musicians. Paul and George were prodigies, sure, but John was an amazing songwriter. . .and Ringo may be the most underrated musician of all time.

Glad to see Winger get some love. They had three of my favorite ballads:

Miles Away
Headed for a Heartbreak
Without the Night

I have pushed him in a couple of those threads back in the day on the OT.

His image is what it is and people just dont get it. I was thrilled when that famous performance at the Rock Hall aired, and thought "holy shite people will finally see what I've been saying for years about this guy"

The smile on the face of George's son is one my favorite things Ive ever seen on a stage. He looks so much like his dad, and I know George would have been there digging the shite out of that solo too. I LOVE IT.

I saw Prince in Columbia last year, and was fortunate to be right next to the stage. He gets sounds out of that tele that you can NOT believe.

A monumental talent.

Another one I always have to mention is Richard Thompson (formerly of Fairport Convention).

A guitarist's guitarist.

Shamefully little known (in the US)

The jimi haters in this thread are hilarious. It was all about the pure charisma. He wielded that strat like it was a 7lb penis made of soul. Prince fans, of all people, should understand that.

So in your mixed up world, Jimi Hendrix is overrated and Ringo Star is underrated?

That's fricked up.

Jimi is overrated in the discussion of modern guitarists.

He was a musical genius, and I haven't said he is not.

I was responding to a "because Jimi was great, everyone else is just decent" comment. Unbind your lady garments.

I am a Hendrix fan, I just happen to think that there are many guitarists who are more genius, and better overall.

Ringo Star is underrated
He is tragically underrated. Think of how he is perceived in the context of that group. Now ask yourself why that is. . .

Is it talent? Watch him play and tell me he isn't talented. He was the beat for the Beatles, who were the driving force behind popularizing "beat music".

Ringo was quiet, unattractive, socially awkward, and (worst of all) he was a drummer. Drummer's never get the credit they deserve.

The ones who don't get credit, usually deserve it. . .and those that do get credit, often don't.

If it was all about charisma, Garth Brooks and Jerry Lee Lewis would be the GOAT in every category.

Very fair comparisons, though I would throw in Robert Johnson with that crowd. The reason Jimi is called the GOAT (the most subjective term in music) so much is because he brought that same attitude to the electric guitar, which is usually the object of the discussion. Jimi's raw talent, soul, and ear for tone oozed out of every lead line and solo. He's the Elvis of electric rock. He did this decades before Vaughan, Vai, Beck, Malmsteen, countless metal players, and yes, even Anastasio, took the instrument to higher technical heights. To this day, almost any track he recorded never loses it's weight upon re-listening, when plenty of other players sound downright boring given the same treatment.

The point is a midi controller could be programmed to produce the most technically amazing guitar line ever heard, but even the damn computer would say that Jimi's soul influenced it in the ensuing interview.

Exactly, and the undoubted influence he had on everyone who picked up a guitar afterwards.
He was the first guy to make a quantum leap in what could be done, everything that has happened after has to be at least partially credited to him.

I thought it was common knowledge that prince was a bad arse on the guitar.

eta- easily one of the most talented popular musicians of all time. more musical talent than mj and elvis.
