Almost every song on it is exactly what was wrong with music then. What are your top 10 from that list?

Agree. Those are the reasons I gave up on radio in the mid 1980s.

Both lists have their share of good songs and unlistenable garbage.

"Popular" does not necessarily equal talent and quality, but neither does "alternative".

College radio is a bit of a misnomer anyway. I was in college in the 80s, and the university station was for aspiring DJs of all genres. It was 2-hour blocks of rock, alternative. country, rap, blues, jazz, whatever. The local non-corporate station leaned alternative, but they played plenty of metal, blues, and jazz too.

I'm a little confused - this was AS OF yearend 1989 or some kind of average for the year? If the former, surprised to see 18 and Life still so high after more than 6 months.

I had a hard time winnowing it down to just 10. Great mix of hair metal (pop) and pop. I could have easily added more. Bolded are crushing, all-time classics:

Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Straight Up
Right Here Waiting
Lost in Your Eyes
Heaven
Listen to Your Heart
I'll Be There for You
Like a Prayer
Eternal Flame
Wild Thing
When I'm With You
Born to Be My Baby
When the Children Cry
18 and Life
Angel Eyes
Patience
Welcome to the Jungle
Close My Eyes Forever
What I Am
Poison
Smooth Criminal
The End of the Innocence

Awe, Come On AlxTgr there’s definitely a few good and even Great Songs in that year end top 100 list

Here’s my opinion

Great- Lovesong, Eternal Flame, So Alive, Patience, Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle

Good- The Promise, What I Am, Close My Eyes Forever, Buffalo Stance, Listen To Your Heart and Bust a Move

And all those Milli Vanili songs were catchy
