I'm almost positive it was a remake. The original was from the 50's or early 60's.

From wikipedia:
quote:

Ostensibly a remake of the 1951 Howard Hawks-Christian Nyby film The Thing from Another World, Carpenter's film is in fact an adaptation more faithful in its premise and characters to the novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr. which inspired the 1951 film, and not a remake in the conventional sense.[1]

Back on topic (sort of) I think the original Planet of the Apes deserves some consideration here.

My top 5 in no particular order

T2
The Thing (1982)
Predator
Alien (all of them [not including that AvP nonsense])
Starship Troopers

It's really hard to make a list of just 5. I'm an Action Sci-Fi fan. Theres a lot of good ones.

How are we on page 3 and no one has argued that Star Wars isn't sci-fi, it is fantasy?

2001 (obvious)
Star Wars (its focus isn't scifi, but it is still scifi)
ET (for being so beloved by the public off the bat)
Contact (heavy handed, but makes up for that by challenging itself)
Eternal Sunshine (good pick by fellow posters, give it the nod over either Solaris.)
