Not legit at all

Kingdom of crystal skull is his worst movie hands down and lost world is his second worst (though it does have his visual flair)

Spielberg is at his best directing adventure/sci fi/ roller coaster movies. He's the Leonardo da Vinci of the genre

Raider
Jurassic park
Jaws
Et
Temple of doom
Close encounters
Last crusade

Schindler's list is good but overrated. Munich and empire are the only serious films that have the Spielberg touch. Lincoln is garbage. I can't speak to the color purple, I don't watch those movies. Again, he's best suited for adventure movies with a dash of fantasy or sci fi.

They ranked all 29 films directed by Spielberg.

The better question is, "How was it not ranked 29/29?".

War of the Worlds is one of my guiltiest of guilty pleasure movies.

Hook isn't that good.

However, it's certainly also not that bad.

Also, A.I. is the only movie I've ever seen worse than IM3

I think Baloo had it right... it's a mediocre movie, but it's not one of Spielberg's worst.

Holy crap I agree with your list.

Sugarland Express is decent. The biggest flaw is that it should be Sugar Land Express. Sugar Land is two words.

maybe he is, maybe he isn't, but he is right on about SPR. The opening battle is among, if not the greatest battle scene ever filmed. The closing battle scene is also amazing. But in between is about 2.5 hours of meh with some big names in cameo roles. and the open and close with the old guy is cringe worthy bad.

I still can't figure out why anyone watched that movie.

But you're correct, I never watched that abortion.

My stab at the list:

These groupings are great and i agree with most but special mention for

quote:

ICONIC BUT NOT AS GREAT AS THEIR REP
06. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
10. Jurassic Park (1993)

could not agree with this more. I was never as big on JP, but prolly because I was in my 20's when it came out and love the book which is darker.

For me the top 3 are Jaws, Raiders and Schindler's List. I would probably not put ET in the Iconic but grouping.

I disagree there... the sniper scene, the storming of the German position that led to the capture of the soldier that Uppham eventually killed, I enjoyed all of the middle of the movie.

Yeah, I can't defend that, but it doesn't take away from the rest of the movie, at least not to me.

Nice job missing the ENTIRE point of the movie.

1. The prologue is *SPOILER* Private Ryan visiting the cemetary where Miller et al are buried.

2. D-Day - we see the rangers fighting to win the war ("Dog One is open!").

3. They get redirected. To avoid a Sullivan-like situation, they are redirected on a personal mission to salvage what's left of Mama Ryan's brood, despite it having nothing directly to do with winning the war.

4. At the end, they're back to fighting to win the war again, because they've literally no choice. Although fictionalized, this is the exact situation our boys faced in the 1940s - victory or death - no 365 day soldiers fighting for survival in subsequent conflicts (and I don't exclude myself from that assessment - my combat tour was 365 days, and only about 335 or so were in country).

5. Epilogue - We see the net result - all the grave markers, Private Ryan and the family he had after the war. They didn't "save" him, but they did. The sacrifice (which is important) AND the result (without which, the sacrifice is meaningless).

It is the definitive combat film about the war at the individual soldier level, IMHO. I do like the Longest Day, and prefer Patton and A Bridge Too Far (among many others) from pure entertainment standpoint, the story (not Spielberg's) and film, "Saving Private Ryan" is an incredible cinematic achievement.
